I went to the country Sheriff and got a criminal record check. I wasn't sure if a state or a local one was necessary, but someone said that Americans could get by with a local one, so I went that route. I was able to get it same-day. No fingerprinting necessary (although mine are already on file for a license to carry a firearm from 10 years ago).

I haven't been asked for this CRC by my university, and I'm on an F-2-1 (marriage visa). There is likely no need for me to have it, unless I get a public school job or my uni asks for it.

Just want to double-check though... you guys sure a local check (non-state) is good enough? The paper I got is pretty basic, has no stamp, and is hand-signed.

local check is perfectly fine. turned mine in a few weeks ago and immigration issued my confirmation number fairly quickly. no hassle. BUT, the CRC does need to be notarized. the notarization itself needs to be certified, then all of the documents (CRC, certification of notary) are to be apostilled by the state.

oops - didn't take into consideration your visa status. not sure what would happen if you simply took it with you and planned on getting an affadavit from the embassy in seoul (if the simple signature would suffice).

Thanks. Yeah, I think I'd be OK just getting it notarized at the embassy, given my F-2-1 visa. Not sure I'll ever need it.

Yea getting an extra one is a good idea. Think what happen with transcripts a few years ago. Some people got ONE - kept it sealed thinking all is good with the world. Until some moron, usually a recruiter or hagwon owner opens the envelope adding a few weeks to the processing.

You never know when you may need an extra one - previous one gets lost on some govofficals desk. Disappears into some managers office never to be seen again.

If you can get it appositled. Also remember they go bad after 6 months. 6 months old and they will be refused.
