US Soldier Questioned over Raping Korean Woman
South Korean police on Sunday investigated a U.S. soldier over raping and beating an elderly Korean woman. Police officers said that they caught him after they heard her screaming and rushed to the scene while patrolling the area. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for her injuries, they said.

Later on that day, the USFK apologized for the soldier's conduct through a press release.

and thus will begin the latest in a long line of anti americanism (which of course not just affects americans but anyone who 'looks' american)

mental note: find the article about the american military woman who was raped by a Korean taxi driver after taking a cab from Incheon. I believe he escaped with a a relatively light sentence because the judge couldn't be sure that there wasn't consent!

Yep, she wasn't injured enough to constitute rape.

Taxi driver's rape conviction overturned
The Seoul High Court yesterday overturned the conviction by a lower court of a 49-year old taxi driver who had been charged with the rape of a 19-year old U.S. female soldier.

The man had received a 10-month prison term in the original trial after being convicted of luring the newly-arrived servicewoman from Incheon International Airport to a hotel near there where the woman said he raped her. The woman reported the incident to U.S. military authorities, who asked for assistance from Korean prosecutors.

The appeals court ruled that the woman had shown no evidence of having refused the man's advances, and that he used "not enough violence to constitute rape."

Jesus- I wonder how much injury they require to constitute rape. Evil or Very Mad

I read that article and I noticed that the ROK has jurisdiction over rape cases involving American soldiers. Didn't know. I thought the SOFA completely protected soldiers from ROK law, but apparently that's not the case.

Anything could have happened. The taxi driver may have told her that she was going to be staying at this hotel or the base was on lockdown and she had to stay off base, etc. She was 19.

The tragic irony of things continues.....

An American committing a crime against a Korean: An outrage that brings out the worst in Korean nationalism and forces people to act out their worst emotions against anyone white.

A Korean committing a crime against an American: It is something that has to be proven and if the evidence is considered "circumstantial", the case could be dropped.

An accidental death of 2 middle school girls: National outrage

A deliberate fire set on the subway: National reconciliation

again, the irony...

it doesn't matter if she was stark naked in the taxi cab you don't get to rape people. Sorry even if they go to hotel rooms. Yeah she was probably stupid and you don't and I don't know the circumstances but NO ONE DESERVES TO BE RAPED PERIOD. And you shouldn't have to be scarred for life or killed to prove you didn't "deserve" it. Remember to ask that you your mom or sister or grandmother if they get raped. Now come on did you really fight hard enough.

I wonder how much rape goes on in Korean prisons. That soldier might learn the hard way exactly how it felt to be the old lady he raped.

It's just a very odd aspect to the story.

Didn't she have orders on where to report?

Yeah, I have to agree. Why would a woman go alone with the guy to a hotel room?

Something just doesn't add up in that situation.

http://joongpil.new21.net/mother-en.htm

This case is heartbreaking.

On April 3, 1997, Joong Pil and his steady girlfriend Jung Eun were on their way to her home in Itaewon after studying at the Kook Ki Won Library. They stopped to use the restroom at the fast food restaurant. Jung Eun went to order soft drinks and Joong Pil went into the restroom.

However, two boys, Korean-American Patterson (17 years old) and Korean Immigrant Edward Lee (18 years old), who were sitting at the table near the restroom, followed Joong Pil into the restroom. They stabbed him when he was using the urinal in the neck and chest, with a knife they normally carried around, severing veins and arteries.

Not really. It just made headlines because one of the guys was American and another had immigrated there.
