Since I found a place that sells catnip my success with making cat friends has really taken off. I took three videos today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-FQzfDomBo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNqWpm3emIM
The first one's sideways because I wasn't thinking. It's fun to watch these formerly distant and unfriendly cats suddenly start to roll about on the ground just like any other house cat after you've given them some nip. I see the orange one all the time and he comes to get catnip from me but he's still not comfortable enough so I have to place it on the ground and walk back a few paces.
This one, however, is another story:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw5jlKldNrE
He or she likes to sit in front of a grate all day and stare at the water, but today he was behind me on the wall. Kind of a strange cat because he doesn't fear or particularly like people either, just wants to know what's going on with the water. I gave him a whole can of tuna one day and after eating just a few mouthfuls he was so curious about the water that he just left the food and went back to staring at the water, which is something I've never seen before in a stray cat.
Here he is looking at the water:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37sJeaUpZy0
When taking that video a little girl with her mom walked by and the girl decided that it was time to stamp her foot on the ground and make the cat run away, something she obviously learned from her parents or somebody else close. Instead of running away though you can see he just looks annoyed, as if he was just about to figure out how the water works and the little brat just ruined his train of thought.
Oh, and here's a cat I've known for over a year. She used to have an owner until they left her so she likes everybody:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viSxWMThGMQ
Lives in a parking lot but the guys that work there (just normal Korean guys in their 20s that are valet parking guys) feed her every day so she lives well, and you can tell by her size. This video is me giving her some exercise with an implement they made from fishing line and a coat hanger.
So...any other cat stories? |

oh wow... that's very nice... I LOVE LOVE LOVE CATS......
but I find that a lot of Koreans HATE CATS... (well.. maybe not just Koreans..)
I was in Ee-Dae admiring a street cat and Korean girls passing by started freaking out, "OMI-GODEU"!! "EWW MOYA!!!!".....
like they've never seen a cat before in their life....
but I'm glad there are those who take care of the stray cats... =) |

The cat videos were fun to watch (except for that sideways one). The cats in my area are just too accustomed to being kicked and whatnot by random folks; even after all this time, they still watch me with a wary eye, even if I'm bringing out some leftover meat or fish product for them to feast upon.
I'd be keen to hear about where you located the catnip.
On a side note, what I'd like to see now is footage of you filming your experience with the felines. Ten bucks says that you'd be giggling like a prepubescent school girl while playing with that coat hanger. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.) |

Actually I just started a new page on catnip on the wiki just for that:
http://wiki.galbijim.com/Catnip
Express Bus Terminal Station, that's the only place I've seen it at. Hopefully we can fill in some more locations, as that's the only one I know. I used a clever technique to get the catnip to that little orange one the first time - I actually stumbled upon them sleeping which was lucky (the black one sleeps with the orange one in the sun) and I had also bought a toy made of a long plastic stick with a feather on the end, and I was able to put the catnip in the feather then stick it out towards them so that they could check it out without coming too close. |

Very interesting. I have to say I'm a little hesitant around Korean strays myself. There are only two Korean strays I ever got close to. One lived at a chicken hof patio and was probably used to being fed scraps. The other was too injured to run. We gave him some food and water.

Sure, most Koreans are afraid of cats. In the past week alone two members of my company website commented on my pet cats, saying "but aren't you afraid living with two cats?" But these days I know too too many Koreans who have cats as pets. Whenever I get together with any group of punks in Hongdae, it's always guaranteed now that cats outnumber the humans. I just found out the guitarist from Shorty Cat has a large number of cats living with her. |

Back when I was in high school, my best friend and I gave his family's cat (black cat) some catnip. It was fun watching the thing climb up the curtains, hang by its back claws and swing back and forth... |

dang, i love cats.
if i were rich and queen of the world, i'd do something about all the strays out there....give 'em a good kitty life.
i adopted a korean kitty while i was teaching there. he'd been left in a box on the street. i got him after the fact from another teacher. he came home with me to canada, much as he hated that 14 hour plane ride. he refused to eat the first 4 days back in canada. argh.
but he's settling in with his canadian cousins (sister's cats), and got to go outside and see snow for the first time recently.
he's the big fat cat orange cat called cashew.

our cat is computer-literate. http://oddjobcat.vox.com
he's not real big on the 'nip... though if you put one if his toys that he hasn't played with in a while in a bag of catnip for about an hour, he just adores the toy again.
we're going to get him a little kitty sister to play with soon! |

Catnip is a hereditary attraction apparently. Some love it and some don't. I might as well punish you with some pictures.
My older cat Millie is crazy about it but her younger half-brother Buster didn't care much until recently, when he suddenly got into it. This is the first time he ever went for catnip. You can see she isn't happy about having to share now.
When Millie is high on catnip, she loses control of her legs and wriggles through the catnip like a big snail. Most of her family members do this.
This last one is a kitten that was rescued by my friend Kiseok. He found this kitten hiding in the wheel well of his car. Luckily it was making a lot of noise, or he would've killed it when he drove away. He kept this kitten.
The one on the left, Cookie Monster, was rescued from the streets as a stray when he was extremely small. He grew up with a litter of domestic American cats born shortly before and has become extremely affectionate. The orange one is Millie's grandfather. When I went to take Millie home for the first time, Cookie Monster jumped into the bag and wanted to go with me too.

our cat, beans, was a rescued stray. some vet found her 2 days old and alone. she's a year old now and i could never imagine a cat with more personality. she likes to wake us up by swatting us in the face and stare at us when we take a shower. just a really cool cat.
what breaks my heart is that we're planning on moving this year and there is a 6 month quarantine. (!) what should we do? has anyone else put their cat through that? |

My cats' family was moved to the US last September. They're very happy living in Boston now and didn't have any kind of trouble with quarantine. |

you're from the UK? there's a program where if your cat has spent 6 months in a country on a pre-approved list, you don't need to quarantine it, you just need a recent rabies shot. unfortunately, korea isn't on the list yet. the US is, and i can't remember where else. it's a pretty long list, if you can find it online.
i'm from the US and my partner is from the UK. if we move to the UK (which i highly doubt, but we're covering every possibility), we're taking the cats to the US first to live with my folks for 6 months or so. then no quarantine.
OddJob stayed at our vet's while we were on vacation for about a week. in that time, he lost quite a bit of weight. i don't think he'd survive the 6 month quarantine. |

Another foreign teacher I know who has more experience in Korea took me to a Dak-galbi restaurant and she said that one of the leaves in the basket with the lettuce was called catnip but she wasn't sure if it was the same catnip we feed cats. |

that sounds like a possibility. we're moving to sweden, which has the same/similar rules as the UK.
if worse come to worse, we'll have my parents in the states care for beans. they would probably have no problems with that, but our cat back home is one old, nasty, disgruntled kitty. i don't know if they would get along.
if we flew back to get her, the plane tickets would be about the same price as quarantine. she'd have to be on 2 long flights though! just getting her to the vet is an ordeal here.
anyone have cat plane trip stories? |
