Thought that was a rather amusing headline. "Resting Males" . . Is that something like "reclining Buddhas" ?

It's the term the paper or whichever office they got their stats from used to refer to adult men who are unemployed and have given up looking for a job. In the survey that was taken, they chose to say they were "resting" for a while, rather than that they were unemployed and couldn't find a job.

Let's see: Korea has 47 million people, about, right? Figure a little over half are men, so that's about . . oh, say . . 24 million males. And of those, maybe half again are adults of working age, and not in school or in the military. So, that's about 12 million. So, that means 1/12th are "resting males". That would mean that 8.5% of all such able-bodied, employable men are "resting male" unemployed. Add that to the ones who are not "resting" and unemployed and I would say that's a pretty high unemployment rate among men in Korea. Feel free to correct my calculations.

As far as household employment, some of the effect of that would be offset by the fact that many women are taking jobs men could have taken, so some wives are bringing home bacon that their men would have traditionally.

Still, . . seems like a pretty high unemployment picture for Korean men.

(Note on grammar: The way I see it, there is an unspoken "The number of . . ." and therefore the subject should be treated as singular, and thus I decided on "reaches". Agree?)

Unemployment figures are devious buggers and seldom reflect the true non-participating percentage of the workforce.

Not to mention that there are a lot of people employed in Korea that don't need to be employed.
Do you need 7 people in the E-Mart parking lot to tell you how to park?
Do you need a separate sales girl in a short skirt for every kind of soap (men, don't answer that!)

There are so many more examples.

Also, I can't imagine that every street vendor hawking squid cakes or hairbands has got a license.

The Resting Males are OK. It's the Smoking, Hacking, and Spitting Males that are blighting the landscape.

So I've been told . . .

The gov't recently announced that it hopes to reduce military service to just 18 months. Economists have come out against the idea because it would dump too many young men into an already oversaturated job market. It's better, they reason, to keep them occupied in the military (where at least they can be resting males with a purpose !)

Curious what 'resting male' is in Korean?
Used to be baek su, meaning white hand.
But I'm sure times have changed, as well as the term.
