Maybe the best songwriter in the folk tradition of the last 25 years. I can't think of anyone better.

you know, he's such a brilliant writer, it's too bad that he's such a drunk. i'm not saying that being a drunk is detrimental to good writing, not always anyways, but in his case it's not been very good for his career. is he doing any solo work nowadays? i know he got the boot from the pogues because of his drinking...
being totally superficial for a moment, despite the teeth, i think he's pretty damn hot. it's his lyricism and voice that do it for me...

MacGowan on being a drunk:

Quote:
The most important thing to remember about drunks is that drunks are far more intelligent than non-drunks. They spend a lot of time talking in pubs, unlike workaholics who concentrate on their careers and ambitions, who never develop their higher spiritual values, who never explore the insides of their head like a drunk does.

I guess this is why I paid 40 bucks to watch him slur and sway through five songs, before calling it a night to "explore the inside of his head".

Talented, Irish prat.

A lot is said about Macgowan's alcohol abuse but remember: the guy was a heavy drinker since childhood. His rapid deterioration during the late 80s and early 90s was due in large part to heroin abuse. He apparently has kicked that habit in recent years (notice the weight gain) but still dabbles in other drugs. The swaying, sometimes incoherent singer who many know and love was quite often higher than a kite.

Of course the booze doesn't help either. Smile

Long live Shane!
