Hardly a hot topic. Where was this thread two years ago? Would have been current then.

It's both. Hundreds of millions of Japanese are laughing too hard to realise they should be offended by Hard Gay, while young Westerners weaned on political correctness since birth throw their gasping, whiny little tantrums.

Personally, I find the show rather offensive (though funny), but not because I consider it a cruel, unfair, demeaning portrayal of gay people. Stereotyping?? Honestly, nobody over the age of seven can even begin to take that seriously. No, my objectiion, such as it is, is entirely to do with the show's overall crudeness, its bawdiness, and its shock-value. It offends my bourgeois, upper-middle-class sensibilities. Or would that be respectabilities? In any case, it offends them, yes it does. But I'm still laughing. As intended. My reaction and opinion would be the same were the show rescripted and called Hard Straight.

The real question is, What are the limits to freedom of artistic expression? And how & why do these limits change from society to society, and especially as one flies from West to East? A comedian in the West today cannot walk out onto a stage without stepping on someone's subjective, delicate toes. For every joke there's a self-identified, ready-to-be-offended "victim group". Were even Charlie Chaplin alive today, there'd be protests by bums, tramps and uncoordinated people outside the cinema, and noisy internet debates between his supporters & detractors.

What it all comes down to, I think, is simple genetics. What Asians mercificully lack is the PC gene. Though some may argue that this blessing is offset by their pronounced NC and RC genes -- national/racial correctness. And so the Japanese can get away with showing Hard Guy on mainstream TV. I say good for them.

-- Slightly offended (though not for the reason you meant) but laughing along anyway

Dear God, the PC crowd strikes again.

God forbid you do anything funny, because someone is going to rub their little lamp and bring out the PC genie to change the name of something to make it less offensive.

What was so bad about that video? What?

If you saw a man wearing that outfit, would you not know he was gay? Why? IT'S BECAUSE ONLY A GAY MAN WOULD WEAR THAT OUTFIT. Is that a stereotype? No. It's a fact. Why is it that if you portray anything in the general likeness that all have come to accept you are a bigot?

Does every gay man now have to be portrayed exactly the same way as a straight man? I guess he does if you don't want that PC fairy to come out. Oh! I used the words "fairy" and "come out"! I must be unfairly stereotyping gay people!

The internet works in mysterious ways.

Can't see anything like that ever happening on Korean TV.

Just more and more "celebrity" karaoke and men in wigs and dresses. Now that's gay.

I found myself laughing hard at all of the translated videos I found on YouTube. And I think he's less offensive than Borat. He's not making gays out to be evil, nor dangerous people. While Borat did in regards to eastern Europeans (Or is it western Asians?)

And even though the humor does rely on people getting bushwacked, he didn't attempt to make them look like fools.

So, I'm in the "Harmless Japanese crack" camp. The character was a walking cartoon. Much like Woody Allen back in the 60s /70s.

And while Korean TV is slavishly copying this sort of programming, it certainly is lacking in "raunch", thats for sure.

My friend in Japan found him funny but found it disturbing he would go up to school girls and thrust about them.

Mm.. that part at the end where the little girl's face is planed between his legs, and stays in that position for a long ass time.. a little discomforting. The rest was funny, though. I like his walking method.

You've taught kids. No concept of the "no fly zone" in their heads.
