|
|
More and more I hear the idea being thrown out by Hogwons or Public Schools that they expect ESL teachers to be putting in basically 40 hours a week all told.
Is this a trend? A reality? Should it be so? Should we expect to put in the effort of a normal job here - I thought we were here for vacation lol |

Six hours a day is enough, but too many teachers are putting up with more work for the same pay and are driving down the conditions here.
There are public school teachers who will actually go to their school during the winter and summer breaks and just sit there!
I do have a family to support, but I have some pride left and wouldn't earn my money that way. I know I could get another job here in a day or two.
I am here to work, and work I do, but if it ends up like being a job back home, I will go back home. |

Yeah, it's nonsense. Same pay, yet with more hours. Only 30 hours of actual teaching though. Which leaves another 10 to prepare or sit on your arse and do nothing. |

In terms of dissing public schools, you fail to recongnize one point, which is you deal with a lot less crap (at least in my experience) then in a hagwon.
I work at a public school and love it. Yes, I am here on winter break (parts of it at least because I did teach 10 days this month). I don't have a huge family to feed (just my wife and I), but at the same time, it's not that bad a job. |

I'm a newbie at a hagwon, earning 1.9 for 40 hours a week. I'm doing 30 hours of teaching plus 10 hours of 'prep' (which basically entails writing down which page of the textbook each class is up to in my schedule folder). It's fine by me. In my spare prep time I read and study.
I'd never come back for another year of this though. I'm going to head back to NZ, get certified, and be a 'real' teacher... |

Damn! 1.9 for 40....good lord I get 2.2 for 30-35. I flat out refuse to do 40 hours a week. If I wanted a 40 hr a week job I would stayed at home. My schedule is 2-7 but I have 25 min classes (so 13 classes) with students ages 7-16. I have a maximum of 8 kids per class. I don't know if this is one of the better of the jobs but it sure does sound sweet to me. |

Yeah, sounds like you have a nice job. Congrats!
I've gone through the phase of "Oh my God I'm getting ripped off!" but I'm over that now. I signed the contract, I'm going to stick with it , even though my boss has behaved illegally and broken the contract numerous times (if anything this has made me appreciate the regulations of my home country all the more). I've only got three months to go anyway.
This year in Korea has been a great experience. I'm not earning a huge amount, and I'm working reasonably hard, but it has been a great experience and has definitely changed my outlook. I'm going to leave Korea with much more confidence and more of an idea of where to take my life, plus enough cash saved to pay for my Dip Ed. So despite the less than optimum conditions as far as Korean ESL jobs go, I don't have any real complaints.
But, if my boss tries to screw me come severance time, I'm going to destroy him, and take great pleasure in doing so |

It isn't only how many TEACHING hours you have, how many TOTAL hours ALL IN do you work? Grading, training, meetings, report cards, etc...
Why do I keep hearing so much about the 40 hour week? What happened? I didnt come here to work as hard as a job back hom (mind you most GOOD jobs at home reuire you to stay late a lot so it isn't 40 and take no work home).
My old Hogwon owner, 2 years back even, said that Hogwon owners and school administrators *consciously* felt that ESL teachers were getting too much ffor too little. They felt cheesed that they were coming here for vacation, not work and that there truly is a push to make sure teachers put in 40 hour weeks just like everyone else - esp. since in korea even if you have a 40 hour job officially, you always work longer.
You think he is right? Do you think that a lot of officials really felt that ESL teachers clocking in a TOTAL of 28 hours to 32 hours a week TOTAL had life too easy - that 40 should be the standard (be it through extra teaching, prep, grading, whatever...).

There's something to be said for working your a$$ off in this country - it keeps the mind occupied and the clatter at bay. I've done the hogwan thing at 1.9 for 25/week and managed privates on top of that.
Now, in a public school, I am at school 40 hours a week but my class load is capped at 22 (classes, not hours). I'm finding the "keep the noise out" game a little more challenging. Spare time around here is both a blessing and a curse, imho.
edited to add - posted in reponse ot Hierophants last post, a simul-post with the one above. I am certainly not justifying hogwan directors who are out to enslave. |

Hey I agree with you guys. The '40 hours on-site at all costs' ideology is lame, especially since alot of that time is just empty filler disguised as 'preparation'.
I think it's silly, and that's why I'm leaving in May and never coming back. The only reason I'm here is because I'm not qualified to teach in The West but wanted to get a taste for the teaching mindset. Once I'm qualified, there'll be no point in coming to Korea.

What you failed to examine was the issue of "extended works" in your topic. The employer is required by Korean Labor Law to pay additional remuneration for Sunday works, night works, public holiday works, and when the employer extends the employees working hours. So, what does this mean? The maximum amount of hours an employer can extend the employees working hours to is 48 if the aforesaid is agreed upon in the labor contract. If hagwons ask prospective teachers to sign a labor contract that would require them to work 8 classes per day thats 40 contract hours per week. However, the other 8 hours arent contract hours because theyre preparation hours. So, additional remuneration for extended works could be avoided by the employer. |

I'm a little hung over and can't follow that today. Can you bottom line me? Is this a reason why Hogwons push for 40 hours in contract? |

I put in 40 hours a week for 2.2. It's a full time job. It seemed ok when I signed the contract, but then it started to seem like too much.
On the plus side, I've saved some cash and I am going on a major backpacking tour in 9 days.
Just to clarify, in nine days, I'll be knocking back 40B beer chang in Thailand
Then,.........
Oh, use your imagination |
