(...no it's not a misspelling. I'm not referring to the capital of S. Korea..so lets get that out of the way first!)
If so, why?
What's your concept of it?
Do only humans have one or all living things?
Does it exist before the body or do they come into existence simultaneously?
Where does it go after death?
Did you develop your own concept of a soul or does it come from your religious education?
(I'm just curious what the range of different ideas on this might be). |

I believe that we keep coming back till we get it right. Which is why we should never pick on other people that we don't deem worthy of our regard...we might just end up coming back as the very types we regard with contempt or scorn.
I have a strong feeling that the reason I'm a dog in this life is because I did something to deserve it in my past life. |

In that case, here's hoping we never get it right. |

I heard from Big Buddhists (TM) that there are five kinds of bodies that make up a human (and other 'sentient beings' such as other animals besides humans). We humans and other beings are composite creations of these five bodies. At death all five bodies (emotional body, spiritual body (soul), physical body, and two other kinds of body I can't recall) disentwine. The soul body definately lives on forever and has lived forever, or so they say. I find it kind of disappointing and intimidating that the five bodies break up and go their separate ways. But then who knows what's next, or what's going on, anyway, it's just habit being here and thinking you know.
Once at a Big Buddhist (TM) retreat I asked about continuity of the soul in time. None. The soul body can reappear anywhere in the Universe not just in space, but in time as well. But mostly the Big Buddhists (TM) don't, seems won't, talk about these things. It's just, 'live now and practice'. Some certainly know but don't tell. Most people are running around, like I am, thinking they are 'It' (TM), anyway. When actually the huge majority of people haven't a clue who they are or what they are doing here in the Ultimate Scheme Of Things (TM). Or may have known in (Glimmer Of The Absolute (TM) ) Kindergarten but promptly forgot.

Among philosophers, pragmatists don't understand the question and ask, What difference does it make? |

- Never once had a person give a definition of the soul that was not logically inconsistent
- I have personally been unable to postulate a logically cogent definition of the soul
= Therefore, I believe there is no such thing as a soul
If anyone would like to step up and provide us with a definition of the soul, please, go right ahead. |

Well, there really isn't any need for a precise definition of a soul - the issue is whether consciousness vanishes at death or not, and the rest of it is just details. Since when I lose my consciousness re: something and have no memory of it it is as if it never happened, and I am aware of what I'm doing right now, that must mean that I'm not going to lose what I have, otherwise I wouldn't have known that I lost it in the first place. That's how I know that my consciousness shan't be going anywhere, but I can't guarantee that for anybody else. |

Can't agree with you. You cannot have a discussion about something if you don't even know what it is you're talking about.

Not really sure what you mean by this. |

Yes
If so, why? For me, it's just logical.
Do only humans have one or all living things? Not a soul...but I believe that all of the things that bring me happiness on earth (animals, ocean, etc.) will be in heaven
Does it exist before the body or do they come into existence simultaneously? I believe that the soul came into existence long before the body.
Where does it go after death? Heaven or hell
Did you develop your own concept of a soul or does it come from your religious education? It's definitely my own!! |

i know what you mean, mith.
i used to console myself with that thought, also.
but i'm not too sure that the logic works out. it's gotta be some faulty reasoning:
when my soul dies, i won't remember anything of my past.
i remember something now.
therefore, my soul won't die.
ignoring the reasoning and thinking about this would play out in life, can't wrap my head it too much, but it just seems we're making assumptions about the nature of time that we can't make.
for one, it assumes that time is a line.
it also assumes that the future is already written, stretching out infinitely ahead, and that we and the present time are a little gondola traveling along that line.
i dunno. i can't get my head around it enough to not sound like i'm babbling, but basically i think our perspective is too biased and limited to make this conclusion.

The idea of the "soul" is just the awareness of "self".
But "self" is nothing more than a by-product of your brain functioning. When that stops, so does your "soul". It's a horrible, frightening idea, and that's why we invent heavens and deities: Coping mechanism.
But since we only have proof that everyone is destined to become nothing more than maggot chow, and absolutely no evidence otherwise, that's pretty much how it is. |

It's probably obvious from most of my other posts that I do believe in a soul. I believe the soul to be eternal and an intrinsic part of the Universal Spirit. In fact, I see all of creation as the "body" of the Spirit, so all creation is sacred and has a soul, even the computer in front of you, a rock in a garden, your cat, etc. Though the soul is never separated in relationship to the Spirit, it is separated by distance as a necessity of creation, and the soul karmically progresses back to perfect reunion with the Spirit. However, the process is eternal, a never-ending cycle of expansion and contraction.
The soul makes all life decisions previous to incarnation. In other words, everything we experience in physical life was decided before incarnation by the soul. This includes things we consider traumatic and things we consider good.
My concept of the soul began when I was a Christian, but has expanded in my relationship with an extraterrestrial guide (here's expecting the flaming^^).
