James Dresnok was a 21-year-old army private when he decided to leave his post in South Korea one August afternoon in 1962 to cross into the North. Three months earlier, Private Larry Abshier had become the first known US soldier to defect to the North, while patrolling the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas. In the three years that followed, Specialist Jerry Parrish and Sergeant Charles Jenkins would follow Abshier and Dresnok across the border.

| Jenkins did it to avoid service in Vietnam, which was the next step for many of the boys stationed here. He was hoping the Norks would pass him over to the Russians, but they never did. |

| Jenkins married a Japanese woman who was abducted by the north from Japan back in the 1970s. As you may know, many Japanese were abducted by the North Koreans. Jenkins was allowed to leave North Korea a couple of years ago and returned to Japan with his adbucted wife. He was court martialed by the US Army, spent a month in the brig, demoted to E-1, loss of pay etc. He is now a free man living on a small island in Japan with his Japanese wife. He has written a book althoug, currently, it's only in Japanese. |

And Korean! I'm going to try to find it at Kyobo, according to the Wikipedia article on Jenkins the Japanese title of his book is 告白, which is 고백 (Confession) in Korean. I'm hoping that's the correct Korean title. |

I think the way you've written this it gives the impression that he was married to this woman before he defected. He met her while in North Korea and thus didn't "return" to Japan but rather went there for the first time (as far as I know) upon his release. |

During the Korean war there were a lot of defectors from the allied forces to North Korea. Most of them were said to be misfits, and drifted to China at one stage. There was one guy though who upset most of his army buddies, because he seemed to agree with North korean Philosophy. The statements he made and the questions he asked made everyone uncomfortable.
The book "The Manchurian Candidate" was initially set in Korea, and the guys to be brainwashed were kidnapped along the DMZ. |

| Yes, but it's easy to tell who they are because they always have a picture of the Great Leader hidden somewhere in their avatars. |
