is computer equipment appreciably cheaper in Korea (Seoul, specifically) than in the US? Let's say I wanted to buy a flat-screen monitor for my laptop - how much would a decent one that I needed to last for a year cost me?

How large/small of a screen do you want? Do you want it to double as a TV? Are you fussy about brands?

You can get a 21" no name brand LCD for around 350,000.

not fussy about brands, but I dont like looking at my tiny laptop screen. I'd settle for a 19" or even a 17"

A 17", no-name LCD screen here will cost about US$200.

You do have to take shipping from home to here into consideration and that can make a difference if you are thinking of dragging one with you. You may also have to think about shipping it home in a year or two as well and the shipping may be worth more than the cost of the monitor.

Also you have to make sure that the power supply on your monitor will work on 240v or you will have to get a step down transformer / power converter (240 to 110v) as well.

You will also need to get the plug changed from the US 3-pronged one to a 2 pronged round pin. Adapters are easy to find and are cheap here.

These may be minor inconveniences but they all add up in weighing the factors about where to buy.

Are you serious that a 21" noname screen will cost 350,000 won?? I can get an LG 22" widescreen or samsung for that matter in Toronto, Canada for only 275,000 won brand new....are you people shopping in yongsan? With that in mind, building a computer from scratch the parts are cheaper in Korea are they not, compared to North America ?

Thanks

Jon

Please note the 22" generic brand with a 5ms (less than 8 is fine for gaming) for 275,000 which is something like 265 bucks US.

Yeah. You can get a really generic Chimei 22 inch for something like 250,000 won. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that route, but, if it floats your boat...

(Incidentally, I've got a friend with a 19 inch Chimei widescreen that he's pretty happy with.)

Thanks,

Although I have found some dirt cheap prices on the Danawa website ie an LG 26" widescreen for a mear 210000 won, so I'm not too worried about having trouble finding cheap prices in Korea anymore

Cheers
