Does anyone know the cost and how long each would take?

LP says by shinkansen (bullet train) it is 5-6 hours and costs 21,720yen.
Overnight bus takes 14.5 hours and cost 15,000 yen; and you can also fly (these days airlines are handing out cheaper domestic flights which nicely competes with the shinkansen.)

You can get more information like that from the Japanese Tourism people at www.jnto.go.jp.

i would recommend the train over the bus even if the expense is more..

You can leave Fukuoka in the morning and be in Tokyo late afternoon..

However...the bus is uaually overnight which means you can save a night on accomodation as well...doesn't mean you will get a good sleep though

I checked the airlines, they were pretty steep. Are the prices in your post one way or round trip, Ekuboko?

Yes, one way.

If you want to do a return trip Fukuoka-Tokyo-Fukuoka, then it's best to buy a JR Pass.

Regarding ways to get cheap domestic flights, read p754 in the latest Lonely Planet Japan.

Just buy a weekpass on the Train system it saves a lot of cash.
