| What would be the best area of HK to stay if one was doing a five-day trip? Is HK Island or Woloon (sp?) better? Could anyone recommend a good mid-range place? |

| Both HK Island and Kowloon are good bases. Some of the top hotels in the world are in Kowloon (such as the Peninsular). One thing to keep in mind is that HK hotels are massively expensive, so "Mid-range" prices will get you a really dingy little room. I stayed in one of the guest houses in Kowloon in a building next to Chungking Mansions. I paid 35USD a night for a tiny little dirty windowless closet with a shared bathroom down the hall. The other rooms were occupied by Filippina bar girls (about 4 to a room). If you're looking for a cheap place to crash, I would recommend that area. There are tons of places. If you want absolute cheapest, Chungking Mansions in Kowloon is a world-famous building full of some of the most run down little guest houses in an Asia metropolis, complete with roaches and mysterious ooze. |

You can get into places like the MarcoPolo or Harborfront for as little as US$60 per night for their standard rack rate. Why cheap out when you can go 4 or 5* for not much more.
Kowloon is cheaper than the HongKong side of the harbor. The Peninsula is overpriced and NOT worth the money unless you like to stay in the Old Grande Dame. Great to say you've been there but not worth it otherwise.
And as a PS, Cathay offers a 3 or 4 night package (4* hotels) complete with transfers and airfare (Incheon-HK return) starting at 430k won.
For more information and reservation, please call at 02-3112-800 and ask about the "Visit Hong Kong Now" packages. English service is available., |

there is also a hotel reservation counter in the arrivals area. Paid 50-60 dollars/night at a decent place in Kowloon. Better deal than when I made a booking online for another visit.
Kowloon has more of the budget places than Hong Kong Island. |
