Ahhh Wellington Airport. Many a white-knuckled landings coming into that place.
Check out how much runway the jet at "14 and the one the end that kind of fell out of the sky. |

| Yeah, brings back some tense times flying into Wellington. Every May and August holidays I was sent to my Aunty's house in Newtown, from Christchurch, from the age of 5 (from 1966). I still remember thinking if the plane was going to land in the sea, more than once. Anyway, some good footage. Cheers. |

Some of the take offs are bit dicey too. I remember once coming out north bound and a few minutes into the flight we had some windsheer the plane dropped really fast and all the over head bins opened 
Is anyone surprised that was a KAL plane? |

| You can go to www.airliners.net and on the left hand side of the page, click on aviation photography, starting from most popular. You can several interesting photos of landing at HKK. Chet Lap Kok (sp?) was the worst airport in the world for landings (due to the approach pattern to avoid the mountains, winds, etc.) until they changed the airport. |

I flew into the old Hong Kong Airport on the last day it was open. Looking out the window, I understood why they were closing it.
My scary airport now is Midway in Chicago - yes, IN the city. You take off with a steep climb and bank (always fun). Landing can be smooth, but can also involve steep descents. Last year a plane skidded off a runway in the snow, went through the fence and crushed a car waiting at a red light on a regular city street, killing one person in the car. |

Those were some great pics. Wellington's problem is that is has a similar problem on a very short runway (less than 2km) with no run off space. If you overshot you go plunging into rocks at the southern end or into electrical wires and a major wellington arterial road on the northern end.
Although I remember when I was a kid a united 747 managed to make a landing there when I was a kid. Needless to say the passengers and freight weren't on the plane when it left. |

That's Chek Lap Kok. It's just the island where they built the new international airport in Hong Kong. I've flown in there, and I've seen worse. Like this one, my official nominee as the WORST airport for crazy landings:
Funchal.
The island of Madeira is a slice of Heaven on Earth. But getting there involves a detour through HELL.
If you've ever been there, then I don't need to explain that landing. If you've never been there, then it isn't possible to convey with mere words how... fuh-huh-huking turbulent... and scary that landing is. Or can be on a bad day for flying. And lord, do they get some BAD DAYS for flying.
Pro-Tip: Pack a clean change of underwear. Or two. Oh, and you should double up on the inflight drinks. They may be your last.

Chek Lap Kok airport is the new airport and landings there are routine. Kai Tak airport is the old airport known for the interesting landings.
Kai Tak and the airport in Wellington suffer from serious crosswinds. Most airports have 2 runways, so the plane can land parallel with whichever direction the wind is going. But Kai Tak had only one runway. From what I've been told, if there is a significant crosswind, planes have to crab land. This requires to approach the runway at an angle and then land with one wheel touching down first then swinging the plane to center (i think). Anyways, if you don't crab land in a strong crosswind, than the chances of a roll over increases greatly.
So that KAL airplane landing is a proper landing in a crosswind. |

I have about 2000 hours on a private license. The hairiest landing I ever did was in Spokane International in Washington state.
I had picked up a tiny rock between the disc and the puck of the right wheel brake on take-off from a pea-gravel runway. I did not know it.
I had my wife and three of my kids in the plane.
The circuit, the approach the line-up were perfect. I touched down and the left wheel did not rotate. The wing dipped. I gave full opposite rudder and aerliron and full brakes on the right wheel.
I taxied off the runway and just sat there. The tower called me and said; "That was downright exciting for a moment, did you know your wing actually touched the ground!"
I called back. "Can your direct me to an FBO (thats where they sell gas and fix planes)."
I got the the FBO and they checked things out. There was a cricular groove in the disc. There was paint off my wingtip.
The guy at the FBO couldn't believe I had come out of it
I borrowed his washroom and changed my pants. Then I, my wife and kids went to the main terminal and had dinner with the guys in the tower. They paid and signed my log book.

When I worked for FedEx, they allowed us to jumpseat on the planes. I got to ride up in the cockpit when we landed at the old Hong Kong airport. That was an interesting experience. I'm not sure how they avoided a serious accident at that place.

I love flying into Midway. You get a better view of downtown and flying over the bungalows is more interesting than O'Hare's approach. And it's a lot closer to where I stay. |

I love flying into Midway. You get a better view of downtown and flying over the bungalows is more interesting than O'Hare's approach. And it's a lot closer to where I stay. |
I fly out of Midway to Nashville on Southwest. I've done it enough to be used to that climb and bank on takeoff now. But I still don't like landing there in bad weather, even if the view is great on good days.
And O'Hare is better for me in terms of where I'm going in the city. |
