Quote:
"North and South Korea shared the view they must end the current armistice and build a permanent peace regime," President Roh Moo-hyun and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il said in a joint statement at the end of their three-day meeting in Pyongyang.

They will push for talks next month with China and the United States to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, which technically is still going on because a peace treaty has yet to be signed.

So -- does anyone think the war will actually end, or is this only symbolic (or another play at international favor by President Kim)? Will Kim actually give into the proposed nuclear decommissioning program?

Of course he'll give in. For a few months, anyway. This thing is going to drag on as long as he breathes.

Only way Korea will EVER be united is if:

1) Mr. Kim dies and no strong leader replaces him.

2) Things get so bad that people revolt.

Otherwise, all this talk of peace and such is just pandering to a certifiable nut. Kim Jong Il will only compromise so long as he needs to. Once he's in a favorable position, or gets what he wants, he's a tough guy again.

Reunification will only happen if the South adopts the North's system. Lil Kim and the rest of his crew live great lives because of that system. I am sure they will not be willing to give up their high life without a fight.

Seriously though, it isn't going to happen. The North is 40 years behind just in infrastructure alone. Forget about different world views, economic systems and lives of the citizens of each country. The South will have to start building infrastructure, power plants, schools that only partially brainwash the Norks, and a whole lot more if there is to be a successful reunification. If the North and South half-ass the reunification plan it will have serious economic/political ramifications.

The war may end just in time for a new one to start.

Where do you think the hammer is likely fall first? Perhaps on all the foreign teachers taking obscene amounts of money from the glorious Democratic Nation of Han Sparkling?

The first thing hit will be taxpayers. Expect a huge hike.

Then a lot of foreign investment will be hit. Property values will tumble.

I guess if you own a lot of land or Korean won, it's best to get rid of it before it happens.

The hammer will b about 5 million norks coming across the DMZ

1. I cant see how the Sorks can stop them. They will come.
2. 5 million shocked, angry, poor, unwanted people. Crime will sky rocket, property rices will take a dive, basically, its gonna be chaos.

Just for starters

Yeah, it will be a nightmare. The North and South really need to develop a 50 year plan for reunification. They need to lay out specific steps and things that need to be accomplished. Can you imagine them trying to do this?? It took them 2 weeks to set an schedule for this summit and then they couldn't even stick by it. Reunification will be the ultimate gongshow.

I cant see it happening if the leftists do it. I guess I shouldnt be, after 6 years here, but Im still shocked that Koreans didnt see this coming: they elected a bunch of people who have absolutely no experience running anything. This included the current president who didnt even graduate university (did he even graduate highschool?), a bunch of sleazy idiots whose biggest accomplishment is running from riot police. They elect these morons into office and it takes them 10 years to realize their mistakes.

This recent annoucement like all previous "announcements" is yet another half-ass attempt from both sides to capture their "15 minutes." I mean really folks, was reunification ever an issue as it relates to G8 members?

NK has no real 'value' to the global community in terms of natural resources. As the living byproducts of the Korean War gradually disappear the mystique of the 38th parallel, much like the 'mystique' of royal jelly' will become yet another national commodity.

Phew!

Well the south doesnt want it, and the north Really doesn't want it so im guessing reunification will ONLY happen if there is a bloody revolt in the NK.

I watched that documentary "crossing the line" about the Americans that defected to the North. Anybody else ever think of joining the Glorious Democratic peoples Republic of korea?
