I've been invited to have ddeok-guk with a friend's family for Seollal.

As a guest, what is an appropriate gift to bring?

...er, right. I almost forgot where I was living for a minute. Thanks.

I should clarify. What would be an appropriate special gift that I could offer without reducing myself to a slave of meaningless consumerism, the appearances of which are much more clearly obvious in this society than from back home.

Are there any ideas for a classy gift, you know, something that would mean that I sincerely appreciate the invitation?

My sense of self shudders at the notion of purchasing a set of 3 1-liter plastic bottles of olive oil as a symbol of gratitude. Maybe I'm just trying to be too sophisticated.

You are not Korean. Buy a nice bottle of wine. It will be appreciated. Really, what every you get will be appreciated.

I have gotten gift badkets of Spam......that was NOT appreciated. But one day a kid gave me a can of Spam and that was appreciated. I had that can for 2 years before throwing it out. I did write the kid a nice thank you.

You can buy some nice bottles of wine as gift sets now...

I got a really nice ginsaeng-ju for chuseok and even though it tastes terrible the bottle was really cool so it was really good....

Hmm...I like the idea of a bottle of wine.

The only times I've heard people talk about wine over here, it's been about red wines only. I could get my hosts a bottle of white zinfandel to help broaden their horizons.

Han-gwa (traditional Korean rice cookies thing) or fresh/frozen meat is considered upper class people's gifts, cos they are rather more expensive than others. Wine, too.

I always give han-gwa because I personally like eating them and think they make good gifts.

Just don't get Spam or that nasty instant coffee. Unless of course your hosts like that stuff. Start hinting around to see what they like if you don't already know. That's how to be a good gift-giver. I always ask people what they like, etc.
