I like Dong-jak. Easy to Itaewon, easy to Kangnam, centrally located. |

Like what?
Also, when I look on Google Maps there is a big treed area between Chung Ang University and Dongjak station on the blue line. Is that a nice park with jogging trails? |

The emart at Yongsan is 2 stops over the river. The lotte mart at Shilim is 4 stops. Costco at Yongjae is not too far away. |

For those who live in the area... how much would a taxi cost to Hongdae?
Also, are there any gyms in the area?
Any nice snack bars like 'GimbapCheonguk' or 'GimbapNara'?
Any western restaurants like Outback or TGI-Fridays? |

I think it's getting more popular for a couple reasons. Like others have said, it's close to Itaewon/Yongsan as well as Gangnam. Also because of its proximity to Gangnam, it's close to a lot of hagwons and schools. It's also a little cheaper for rent than neighbouring Seocho-gu and Gangnam. Close to three universities too, SNU, Chung-ang and Soongsil.
A taxi to Hongdae after midnight would probably run just a little over 10,000. There's a market area near Isu station that's really good with a lot of little restaurants. As for western family style places, you'll have to go a little further south (15 minute walk) from Isu to Sadang, which has TGIF, Outback, Krispy Kreme and a good sushi buffet. |

Yes, it is an area of tens of thousands of people, in one of the biggest cities in the world. Of course there aare gyms.
I have a fully equipped gym 2 minutes from me with underwater weights and all sorts of expensive stuff, if that's up your alley (not mine). There are about three good outdoor workout parks 50 seconds from my front door. I walk 15 minutes to my university for my free university gym and Olympic plates though.
There are community centers in Dongjak with Judo classes, Kendo, etc, there's one of the best boxing coaches in the world in Dongjak, there's a rock climbing wall, skatepark, etc in some of the parks there. More than enough to do.

I know a Gimbap Country in Heukseok dong.
The Heukseok/Sangdo area is full of cheap places because of the university population and all the people living cheap in goshiwons and hasuk jibs around there.
I recommend you go to Noryangjin fish market a few times.

Maybe in Sangdo dong but I don't see them in Heukseok Dong, although there is a Dominos outside my apartment. |

I live near Sadang Station.
Easy to get to Gangnam, Yongsan, Dongdaemoon, Namdaemoon, Seoul Station, Hongae, Shinchon, Jamshil. Pretty much everywhere is under 15,000 in a taxi, except during traffic when it may get up to 20,000.
It doesn't have the clout of Gangnam, even though it is south of the river, so apartments are much cheaper.
Lot's of restaurants, anything from cheap kimbapchunguks, to 'family' restaurants, to fairly pricey but nice restaurants. You can get whatever you want within two or three subway stops, or a 4,000 won taxi fare.
There are a few small grocery stores that provide 90% of what I need, and they deliver... |

Didn't realize there were so many peeps in the Gu.
I've been here for a few years and like it quite alot. Like others have said, easy to Itaewon or Gangnam. Living near ISU station makes things convienient as line 4 and line 7 intersect.
Two or three years ago I would literally go weeks/months without seeing another foreigner in the hood, now no more than a few days pass.
It's got most of what anyone needs and it's nice that it's so close to the river.
6000 taxi to Itaewon. 10000-12000 from Hongdae.
No one mentioned that Gwacheon is close by. Very nice area. Seoul land is on line 4, as is the horse race track if you are into that sort of thing.
Welcome to the neighborhood.
Seems as though a few more people on this forum know the area better than I do after more than 3 years of living here. I guess I have to start venturing out in my own neighborhood more. |
