My rather cheapish 5.1 channel speaker system seems to be dying a slow death. It used to have a remote, but the remote or the remote sensor went bad long ago, and now it appears the volum control doesn't work. Or, at least, I can no longer increase the volume anymore.

Anyway, the set was around 3-4 years old, and wasn't exactly cutting edge when I bought it anyway, so rather than attempt to have it repaired (at my wife's stubborn insistence) I think I'm going to buy a (semi-)decent set of speakers this time around.

So, first of all, everything I do is based out of my PC. Second, I mainly watch movies and play computer games, with a bit of music thrown in from time to time. Third, the system is in my very average sized living room (about 5 pyung or so.)

From looking at speakers over at danawa, there doesn't appear to be the widest selection in the world. I looked at a couple Logitech speaker sets that seem ok.

The cheaper one is the Logitech Z-5300. It's a bit older, but it reviews well. Total system power is 280 watts (100 on the subwoofer.) Price: about 200,000 won.

The more expensive one is the Logitech Z-5500. It's a little over a year old, but it reviewed very well and comes in at 505 watts (188 on the sub.)
Price: about 415,000 won.

Now, I'm sure that both these systems at max volume will be more than loud enough to bother the neighbors, so my question is, what kind of benefit does having a more powerful system have on sound quality at lower volumes, if any?

I picked up a nice Britz system (2 speakers and separate sub-woofer w/ vol/bass/tre controls all in very hard and sturdy cases) for 30,000 here on @buy and sell. They rock out my apt no problem, can't hear some talking next to you at half vol and, have my neighbors banging on their ceiling every night! Cost around 100,000 new they were in perfect condition. Why pay for something new when you can pick it up second hand for a fraction of the price. Just check out the buy/sell forums here at Dave's and others in Korea as well.

If it doesn't have to be surround system (I play my games wearing a headset) go and listen JBL's Encounter 2.1 speakers. I ordered mine from HERE and I'm pretty happy with them considering the price I pad for them. Some people may not like white speakers though.

Watts mean absolutely nothing anymore. Especially with computer speakers. I suggest you head to Youngsan and just try listening to different setups.

I would avoid Britz if possible. Most of the teachers have them at work and they sound crap.
