Just saw this on the Marmot's Hole, and figured it would reach a higher audience here. Check out the link.

http://www.rjkoehler.com/2007/02/03/ytn-on-disgraceful-foreigners-of-hongdae/

Do any of you think we're gonna see a repeat of the horrible summer/fall of 2002? Like friggen clockwork.

excerpts include:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are there many drunk [foreigners]?

Theyre all drunk. They go around in packs of three or four. Never alone.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many residents are particularly worried that young drunk foreigners might go beyond simply outrageous behavior to commit crimes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amidst the thoughtless behavior of some foreigners and the failure of the authorities to maintain order, the area around Hongik University, praised as street of romance and youth, is becoming a lawless zone.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, Hongik is becoming more like "Escape from New York" every time I go there. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, it's gonna be a looooooooooooooooong summer.

If being drunk was crime 50% of Korean would be behind bars at any one time. Yay for Korean racism

Real election season is still well ahead of us by Korean standards. It's like the US where you need two years of campaigning.

Actually, it isn't anything like clockwork. I was here in '97 and '02. They were nothing alike. Of course, something could happen and the whole wave of anti-foreigner stuff could come back, but my feeling is that it won't. The media that I check up on isn't displaying the same mood as in '02. At least not at this point in time. Things could change, but until they do, no need to get worked up over a fantasy.

I suggest that yonhap journalists abroad be monitored, followed and reported on their every move.

I once saw some soldiers peeing at a Mini Stop... on the 6 o'clock news. A few nights later I watched a Korean guy stop right in front of a ground-floor bulgogi restaurant to pee on their sign.

I don't see how this is "gearing up for elections".

Its in line with Korean journalism from the rest of the year.

If you go over to the movie theatre thing at the Nagwon Arcade and walk out the back, you can see a brick wall with 소변금지 spray painted on the side. Laughing
