I in SK right now, working at a hogwon, which is ok, nothing special. I've sort of gotten into a routine here, but I cant seem to find any more work.
I have been givin permission to work in the morning, or I can put up flyers and see if I can get more classes for W20,000/hr more which I dont mind doing.
But with all the Public School jobs opening up in March, I think I could get into a bigger town with more p.t work etc. I also have a visitor in April, and I want 2 weeks of JUST full time work, as I know I wont be able to get it off.
What would you do, would you move where there is more work available? Would you put up some flyers see if you can get some extra classes? I want to make 3mil/month, and I'm at 2.2mil right now. So if I can get an extra two classes a day, that will bring me up to 3.0mil, and I wont need to move.
Also I dont plan on staying the full year, I will go home in the summer (Aug). But I plan on coming back in a year or so....I came over for a purpose and by spring that goal will be accomplished.
Also, should I get my TESOL while I go back home, will that allow me to get more money when I come back? |

| Wait... So you're considering running out on your job now, to go to another job which you plan on running out of early as well? That ain't right. |

Are you talking about getting privates, or do you have kind of agreement to teach extra classes for your boss at your hagwon? Privates are illegal, but many teachers do them. I don't have a need, because I'm teaching 21 hours at my new uni next semester. I'll get some decent OT and extra for night classes.
FYI, my friend was making more money working for a public school, because the teachers always have kids. They often turn to the one foreign teacher at that school to teach those kids. Illegal, but it happens. It's kind of the hidden secret of public school work. He pulled down another 1 to 1.5 million on top of his 2.1 pay. And he wasn't even asking for classes. Took a few months before the teachers approached him, though.
When I get married later this year, I will leave uni-land forever, and teach at a public school in an affluent area. My wife and I will set up a study room and make much more than I can earn here. I don't have a Ph.D, or even an MA, so my wages are kind of locked around where they are now. I won't be jumping to any top-level unis. |

goodgood, stfu.
Gsxr750 (wicked bike btw) thanks for the response.
I think I"m just getting the 3rd month stir crazy disease. I am just going to stay at my current position, and tell the director I'm putting up flyers in near bye apt buildings for extra classes.
After i'm done this time in Korea when I come back I will try at a public school, as I dont want to work at a hogwon again.
Will a TEFL get me more money at a P.S job? |

This is sollisciting for private lessons and your employer cannot give you permission to do this legally on an E-2 visa.
What he can do is give you permission to work at a different school....big difference.
You cannot get around the law when it comes to pvts while on an E-2 and your employer cannot give you permission to teach pvts (he cannot do so legally).
You choose to roll the dice there.
Also your post is confusing...
Do you intend to jump ship because you see a better job out there?
If so, no problem but give notice to your employer and quit do not just pull a runner because you will be screwing teachers that come after you, your co-workers and your students. |

No I'm not jumping ship, I was a bit stir crazy before, but I've settled down now. I'll stay. I'm going to see what I can do about finding more work here.
I meant if I put up flyers for the school, then the people call the school and set up class times, so it's all done through the school. But my director doenst do anything, I thought if I was pro-active I could go get more business for them/me.
Ya know? |

You can't change jobs without getting a letter of release from your employer and your visa cancelled by immigration.
What makes you think you'd get 'more work' from a public school? You'd be at school from around 8.30 or 9.00 to 4.30 or 5.00 getting little or no more pay.
Your posts make it seem that you have little commitment to doing the simple things necessary to establish yourself in a good position here. |

Well if I worked a P.S position I could find night work at a hogwon.
I am in Korea for a goal, a financial goal, that's all. I'm not here to get a good reference or anything. Plus I'm a little stir crazy in my third month in this little town, and only know a couple people, who arent even in this town.
I'm going to stick it out with this job, hopefully I can get some extra classes through them. I'm not staying the full year though, when my goal has been reached they will get my letter that I'm leaving.... |

This is what contributes to giving foreigners a bad rep here. The school is proberly honest aswell, and after Darkness leaves it has a good chance of leaving bitter resentment in the mind of the Hagwon owner towards all foreigners, which screws it up for the next poor sod..
Well done Darkness, an upstanding person of character, I applaud you |

1. You can not legally teach at a public school and a hakwon (not on an E-2 visa). There have been people on this board who tried and were told this. Although admittedly Immigration is not that consistent.
2. If your employer is ticked off enough he can place a black mark on your immigration file, (claim you stole money or items) and then you will find it very tough to get back in Korea. |

I am going to give them 6 weeks notice just like it says in my contract!
If you got the night time hogwon added onto your visa which already had the P.S it wouldn't be illegal, then you could work both. |

You understand why you're getting the responses that you are in this thread? You ask 'what would you do?' in the title. Well, most of us who regularly post on the job-related board aren't here to make a quick buck and get out with no real commitment to teaching or Korea whatsoever, so what we'd do is rather different from you. |

Give the guy a break!! He wants to make some extra money on the side, does this make him a bad person??? I think not. And so what if he doesn't finish his contract. As long as he's not doing a midnight runner, it's not giving anyone a bad name!!
And you CAN get permission to work on an E-2 visa at a hagwon and a public school. Done it several times. But I do agree that different immigration offices do different things.
Darkness:
I was in your same position a few years ago and completely understand your situation. I got permission to work at a kindergarden school three times a week in the morning for two hours. Then also permission to work at a public elementary school two times a week in the morning for another two hours. Then worked my hagwon in the afternoons. Then met this guy who worked for the LG company out there in the sticks who hooked me up with privates teaching him and his coworkers TOEFL almost every night. So, it is possible (but all that did take some time) to get extra work if you want it. And I ended up leaving before my contract was over too. Took it out there for as long as I possiblly could; can't take the city outta me. So, I would start with kindy schools first. And maybe try to find a Korean friend out there to network through.
Hope this helps, and good luck! |
