I believe you are suppose to get 30days pay if the owner fires you without 30 days notice.
Call the labor board 1350 Surprised

Before anything else happens get the letter of release if you can!

Many hogwan owners and directors are "considered weird" by ANYONE'S standards.

You may wanna check the first sentence of the OP.

"I've been working under the table at a very strange hakwan for Jan."

Sure, call the labor board and tell them you worked illegally for one month Rolling Eyes

you may want to check the part where the OP said "I returned from my visa run in Japan."

If the OP has a VISA and it's legal then the place has to give her 30 days pay/notice.

That may backfire on the OP though. Just use the threat to get a little cash under the table and the LOR.

Actually, you do need a 'Letter of Release' if you're fired. You need one if you quit, too. You don't need a letter of release, however, if your director goes into immigration personally to cancel your visa which in many cases they don't do.

The only time you don't really need one is when you complete a contract, and sometimes, you need one even then. I know of at least one immigration office (Busan) that will ask you for an LOR even when you complete a contract and are moving onto another.

You need to work for 6 months to be entitled to 30 days notice or pay. It might work as a threat but the labour board won't be able to actually do anything for you. The most you'd be able to hope for would be sympathy.

If you got a written notice of being fired it will function as your letter of release or should in theory, at least.

What you need is your boss to go with you to immigration with a letter of termination (basically the same thing as a LOR) and get your visa cancelled. Do that first and foremost. After that you can work on getting 30 days pay from him.
