|
|
We are living in temporary accommodation at the moment, as we are looking for a job that can give me and my pregnant wife larger than single sized accommodation, near-ish ro Seoul.
There is a evidence of black fungi in the corner of one room, and my wife smells a fungus smell whenever we arrive back after being out for a length of time.
Can anybody advise on detrimental health affects of this?
Thanks,
Ken |

I don't have any advice, but I appreciate your posting this as I'm in the same boat. My school recently moved me to a new apt. and I have mould on the ceiling. I've also been worried about what I could be breathing in. I've tried scrubbing away at the stuff to no avail. |

It is not healthy. Spray it down with a mixture of bleach and water (1 to 3) or a mold remover from the store. Then open the window and take a break from the house for a few hours until the bleach smell goes away.
Get a job with a public school and get a 2 room house if you are married and expecting. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll try a strong bleach. |

Many apts. in Korea have mold in them. It's disgusting. One reason, is there is no way to air some of them out, without opening your front door or a window with no screens. Can you say bugs and mosquitos??? I won't be able to open my windows in the summer because there are no screens. Only the tiny bathroom window has a screen. I once read a story about this lady in the states whose house was so full of mold, her whole family was in and out of the hospital with respiratory illnesses and the like. They had to move out of their house. So, yes, too much mold can be very dangerous to your health/well-being. I have yet to live anywhere in Korea that has zero mold, though. |

Be careful with fungal infections of your living environment. Some types of fungus can cause asthma and other respiratory problems, as well as DEATH. Last summer I saw a bit on the news about a Korean family succumbing to a toxic funal growth in their home last summer. I would clean that up right quick and try not to breathe any of the spores. Especially if it is black, you should stay on top of it.
If you need to control the humidity in your house, try turning on your stove fan and, ventilating your bathing area well, and keeping the filter of your airconditioner clean. Also, check behind your furniture and in shoe cubbies every once in a while to see if anything is growing there. UV light also kills fungus, so you make sure you let the light in there once in a while.

When I lived in Korea I had a large ground floor apartment. The mould was very bad and didnt respond to bleach. When I arrived home from a short vacation the smell was overpowering. I called my director in to take a look and explained my extractor fans were not working. He suggested the solution was to leave the heating on (this was August) to dry the place out!
I did not take any notice and just opened my windows as much as possible. When I was due to leave I took my wages (which were kept in sealed envelopes in my bedroom drawer) to the bank to wire the money home. The poor bank clerk who opened the envelopes got her hands covered with black mould as the money unbeknown to me was completely mouldy.
I dont know what these conditions did to my health but I am glad I did not stay longer! |

I can't get rid of the mould in my apartment. It is a manefestation of a god older than our very universe.
Other people see the Virgin Mary and Jesus in their weird random shapes. I see evil wizards.

Some mold is harmless and some is very dangerous and you can't tell the difference without lab equipment and/or years of experience. Clean it with 1:3 bleach/water comb, now! Even if it doesn't remove the mold stains, it will kill the active/live mold and the dangerous mold spores. This is very important to do.

I felt crappy at Christmas and found a heap of green mold going to town in the closet. The door had been closed for months, the closet empty, which wasn't a problem until Winter. The floor of the closet doesn't have ondol pipes, and the back wall of the closet is the apt. outside wall. Because it's colder in the closet (with the door closed) than in the apt heated by ondol, condensation (water drip on the walls) formed and the mold mindlessly splayed itself across half the wall, out to get me, out to get everybody, take over the world, just like Ronald McMold Hamburger Restaurants, them golden, moldy arches.
Until the unlucky (for the McMold Franchise) day I opened the closet door and, surprise, kill me I'm mold. Which I did, entering the closet with bleach sprayer blazing. It never came back. I hit it with 100 percent bleach just to make sure, heh. The same thing happened in the little foyer where the apt door meets the cold hall. Condensation forming, mold forming, asking to be killed. I'd recommend wearing goggles and rinsing your eyes with water afterward if you want to see the end of the world, which will come by mold (at least in Korea, ha). Bottom line; keep a loaded bleach sprayer next to your pillow and don't hesitate. |

yeah mean, get rid of that stuff ASAP, it's really not good for you, and even worse if it's close to your A/C or ventilation. |
