Hi everyone.

I'm leaving for Seoul in about 3 weeks and my husband and I plan on bringing our dog with us. Any feedback? I know the contract says 31 hours/week but does that really mean only 6 hours away from home a day or more?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with bringing a dog (or other pet) abroad.

Thanks.

although it depends on your school, the 6 hours you are talking about are the hours you will actually be in the classroom. You could end up being at school for many more hours each day. first you will need to spend at least some time planning your lessons etc (again this depends on your school and if you plan to be a decent teacher or to just do the minimum possible) you will also no doubt have breaks between your classes, that could be 10 minute, or an hour or more. You will have to find out what your schedule is like, if you have big breaks between your classes, it might be enough time to go home, or you might end up spending a lot of time at school.

6 hours of teaching a day generally means a lot more work hours, when you take into consideration prep time, grading and dealing with your boss/co workers

Are you coming from the States?

If you are you will need an international health certificate from your vet for your dog.

I have investigated quarantine rules--with the health certificate and rabies shot it is only 24 hour hold. Yes, I am coming from the states. I already have the health certificate. Any insight on someone else who has brought a dog?

Im really glad that you posted this- I have a dog that I want to bring with me as well. Where did you find the rules for Korean quarantine?
My question to you ---how are you actually bringing him over? Are you using a pet transport service? Or can you somehow bring him on the plane with you?

As far as the quarantine rules and basic dog info, I spoke with the Korean consulate who confirmed the process for me and explained the hold. Also, check out this recruiter's FAQ site: http://www.asknow.ca/faq.aspx They direct you to the Seoul airport's site and Air Canada's site for some basic info. I am bringing my dog with me on the plane, just insisting that my recruiter purchase from an airline that allows dogs to fly. BTW, my dog's health certificate only cost $25. I renewed his rabies shot for 3 years on the spot, but his old one didn't expire until April. They accidentally only showed this most recent shot, which won't get him in the country bc the rabies shot has to have been administered at least 30 days before the trip and I'm leaving in a few weeks. I had to go back and have the vet draw up another certificate reflecting both shots. This was important, as well, for getting back in the US in a year. Customs here will want him to have immunity when he comes back in, which wouldn't have been the case had I not renewed his shot for 3 years. Confused yet?

there is no quarantine, you need to have a rabies shot atleast 30 days out and less than a year and you need a vet bill of health within less than a week of travel.
If you happen to be putting your pet in the hold it needs to have a copy of all shots and records taped to the cage, the cage has to be airline approved, 3 days worth of dog food taped to the outside of the cage, bowl for food inside the cage bowl for water inside the cage (its recommended you freeze the water so it doesn't slosh out while its being loaded)
I'd also recommend a lock on your kennel.
If you have a short nose dog check the temp reqs for when your dog can fly (not too hot not too cold)
Tha about covers it

Cerebroden - thats the most detail Ive ever been able to receive. You've obviously done this before. How did your dog hold up with all this traveling?
Im not too concerned with getting him over there - its just how he'll hold up. I saw theres a risk he could get lost or die in transit - im sure its true but it still FREAKS ME OUT! Hes 12 but in excellent and i mean tip top shape. Hes my baby and I cant imagine leaving him behind in the states. Razz

Me and my fiancee recently got a small dog, a toy poodle, here in Korea. We work from 2-10 M-F. Our contract sounds a little like yours, being in the classroom for about 4-6 hrs per day with the rest of the time being for prep for your classes. It will depend on your school if you have to be at school for your prep time, but you probably will. We have an hour lunch and live about 5 minutes walking distance from our school, so we come home and feed him and visit him. He is about 9-10 weeks old and teething so he whines when we leave, but when we come he is always sleeping. As far as your apartment rules, I don't think our apartment allows dogs, but we see other people with dogs so we just said screw it and bought our dog. We live in a 34 story high rise so there is no 'super' patrolling the grounds, so we get away with it. I also read on Korean Air's that if the dog is 10 lbs or less, they can ride with you in the cabin. This is from their website:

Can I fly with my pet?
What sort of pets can I take with me onboard?
dogs, cats and birds
▣ Other animals are not allowed to board the aircraft. Please enquire at an animal transportation agency.
Are all kinds of dogs, cats and birds are allowed?
Aggressive dogs (such as American Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers and Dobermanns) or birds are not allowed.
Can I carry my pet onboard?
YES, if the pet in the kennel weighs 5kg or less.
NO, pets more than 5kg travel in the cargo compartment.
