I just read this article on yahoo and found out a very...uhmm...interesting fact about astronauts:

Quote:
Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry.

Here is a link to the entire story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070206/ap_on_re_us/astronaut_arrested

I guess it makes sense since they are pulling some major G's and their bodies are stressed to the limits......................but DAMN!!

How do you think the Apollo astronauts took a dump in space? They basically crapped in a bag. In a small space capsule, emptying the bags was never anyone's favorite moment, and the smell remained for a good long time. The space food they ate was designed to minimize stool size etc. but there are just some things that are inevitable.

We don't realize how heroic these men were. You wanna crap in a bag for a week? The zero g toilet in the space shuttle was like one of the most remarkable additions in the history of space exploration.

But I don't think the diaper thing for shuttle astronauts has to do with G. They're in full space suits and they're sitting on the pad for long amounts of time. You know?

Hmmm, interesting addition there. It seems things have come a long way from plastic bags to zero G toilets...I would much prefer the latter.

Then how do you explain the wearing of the diaper during re-entry? Just curious. And by the way, NO I don't know. . . . which is why I found the news interesting. Laughing

I have enough trouble taking off in an airplane. If I were sitting on top of tanks of liquid oxygen and hydrogen as they explode, launching me into orbit, I'd ask for a diaper to wear under my brown slacks.

Again we come back to this idea they're coming back in full space suits. Rentry takes time. Maybe longer than some can hold their bowels. I don't think even when the shuttle lands they exist asap. They may have to let the shuttle cool down and toxic gasses disperse.

And how exactly will those toxic gases ever disperse if they're sitting in their spacesuits wearing dirty diapers at the landings site, hmmmmmm?
