Without any real teaching experience besides a bit of tutoring years ago, I worry that applying to ESL positions now might lead me only into some bunk job offers. The kind everyone says to avoid, you know?

There is the alternative of doing some subbing and tutoring in the US here before I start applying to ESL positions.

I wonder, given that this is recruiting season (isn't it?), is one of these routes particularly better than the other?

(fwi, resume has engineering B.S., 3 yrs business/finance work exp. and 1 year of B.Ed studies - no Ed degree though)

TIA very much for your time Smile

You can use your tutoring experience on your resume. List it as REVELENT EXPERIENCE.

Most people receive "bunk" offers. You just have to know how to toss them out!

Good luck!

If you're just planning on working at a hagwon, you are overthinking this. A month or a year or five years of substitute teaching exp. ain't gonna get you a better job. you'd be wasting your time. it doesn't matter. maybe if you got certified as a teacher back home or got your masters that'd get you a bit more money, but you could work as a stripper, put that as the ONLY thing on on your resume and still get a great job (as long as you were a white, non-deformed stripper )

If the field of Asian EFL looks like an appealing career-switch, the best experience you could get would be a six-month contract at a hogwan (after-school academy). That would give you enough time to learn the ropes, get a feel for Korea, and find out what's out here. If it's crap you don't have to put up with a whole year of it, and if you like it you can try to negotiate to stay longer. Try emailing some recruiters asking if they have anything for six months.

A bit of volunteer work at an American school would be of very little benefit in terms of landing a good job here.

If the field of Asian EFL looks like an appealing career-switch, you better lay some money down for more than a few sessions on the couch of a real good shrink! Very Happy
