Put this up earlier, but wanted to remind y'all about it, as this show closes on Sunday. English language programs available. Anyway:
For all those missing good theater or just wanting something different to do on the weekend (or during the week), I hereby inform you of a unique theatrical event, detailed below. Unique in no small part because it tells a story without language, rendering it accessible to interested parties of any nationality or linguistic persuarsion. I could say it's sort of like silent film, except on stage and Korean, but it's much easier to explain if you just come see it. If you would like more information or have specific questions (after reading below), feel free to PM me. Tickets are available by reservation, but more conveniently at the door. Unless the show becomes unexpectedly popular, showing up 20 mins. early should secure you a seat. Note: Reservations are now recommended.
선녀와 나무꾼 (The Angel and the Woodcutter)
Created by Dramatic Company Cho-In
Directed by Park Chung-Euy
Performed at: Hakchon Blue Theater, February 2-11, 2007
Weekdays 8pm / Sat. 4pm & 7:30pm / Sun. 4pm
Tickets: 20,000-regular / 15,000-students / group rates available
Dramatic Company Cho-In has toured world-wide, from England and France to Egypt and Armenia, with their award-winning production "The Train", in the process attracting an international following. Now back in Korea, its latest offering of innovative physical theater, 선녀와 나무꾼 (The Angel and the Woodcutter), puts a twist on a classic Korean fairy tale. Based on the fable of a woodcutter who traps a heavenly being on earth to be his bride, this adaptation moves the action to a world where civilization has disintegrated and violence reigns. Despite hiding deep in montain forests, this catches up with the woodcutter, his mother, and his captive wife. As they confront and are torn apart by outside forces, they must also face their own acts of violence. Drawing on diverse styles, from traditional Korean dance to Chaplinesque mime, and performed without language to an original score performed live on traditional Korean instruments, this is powerful, contemporary theater unlike anything else you have seen.
Due to some sexual content and violence, this production may not be appropriate for young children.
Directions to Hakchon Blue Theater:
Make your way by subway, bus, or taxi (private car is possible, but parking is very limited) to Hyehwa Station (Line 4). From Exit 1 or 2 head toward Paris Croissant, and turn onto the side street, away from DaeHangNo. Take the 4th right and it is in the third building on your right. (If you or a loved one can read Hangul, the map at
