Russian President Vladimir Putin, like most former Soviet insiders (especially those with KGB connections), complained about American hegemony at a recent gathering in Europe. Read on:

Quote:
Putin blasts U.S. for its use of force
By DAVID RISING, Associated Press Writer

Russian President Vladimir Putin blasted the United States Saturday for the "almost uncontained" use of force in the world, and for encouraging other countries to acquire nuclear weapons. Putin told a security forum that "we are witnessing an almost uncontained hyper use of force in international relations" and that "one state, the United States, has overstepped its national borders in every way. "This is very dangerous, nobody feels secure anymore because nobody can hide behind international law," Putin told the gathering. Putin did not elaborate on specifics and did not mention the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. But he dismissed suggestions that the European Union and NATO had the right to intervene in crisis regions. "The legitimate use of force can only done by the United Nations, it cannot be replaced by EU or NATO," he said. Putin's comments to a weekend forum attended by 250 officials, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, came after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the international community is determined to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Merkel said Tehran needed to accept demands made by the U.N. and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Listen, Vlad, I hardly think Russia is in a position to lecture the U.S. given it's corrupt involvement in the food-for-oil program with Saddam, it's attempt at oil blackmail against Belarus, its increasingly strained relations with Ukraine, its invasion of Afghanistan to reinsert a puppet regime in 1979-80, it's unwillingness to bring Iran to task while it builds nuclear plants for the ayatollahs, it's suppression of the Chechens, it's refusal to return the Kurile Islands to Japan, its suppression of the Moscow press, its hand in the assassinations of dissident journalists and others, and of course its sordid Cold War record of support for North Korea, Cuba, and a host of repressive regimes.

I think it's time for Bush to stop referring to him as "my friend Vladimir," for Condi Rice, a Russian expert, to stop having wet dreams of some emerging Russian Renaissance, and for the U.S. and Europe to put the onus on Russia to join NATO.

But does anyone think Russia really wants to join NATO, given the historical baggage?

Is Putin just blowing smoke, making noise on the world stage, or do you think his comments are a harbinger of things to come?

Could it be that the Russian government intends to take an independent course in world affairs or is it just longing for superpower status again?

A bit oif a boycott on Russian gas would be in order. Maybe if they invaded Iran and get their oil that could happen.

No, they are simply waking up. 15 years went by and the Russian people have became tired of American interference. If the horrible Dick Cheney and his evil gang had not sabotaged World Bank assistance back in the early 90s, Russia would not have spent 10 years in poverty due to forced currency devaluation, which threw control of state industries into the Oligarchs (mob) hands. The country became a playground for greedy American (usually fat and Texan) businessmen to come and steal from the Russian people and rape its women. Now Putin is putting his foot down and making these horrible Americans pay. So, the horrible Americans whine and cry about not making obscene profits anymore... Boo-hoo for the horrible Americans!

Please explain to me what makes a country a country and what part of that Russia is missing.

After you've done that, please explain to me how you separate a country from its residents. Because I doubt you hate every single Russian.

If you said something like "The citizens of Russia deserve to get fucked over because of something their leaders did," this gets a little hairier.

Would you like it if someone took it out on you when they disliked something them damn liberals did overseas that you did not support?

Would you be happy if someone took out how they felt about your government on you?

Ah jinju. still fighting his one man cold war.

Putin does have some good points, the best one being that the US' unilateral and illegimate actions (ahem, Iraq anyone?????) are pushing countries to develop nukes.

Plus we are now finding out that W screwed up the Clinton deal because he was told the Nork's were cheating (told, that is, by the same fine folks who told him there were WMD in Iraq and Saddam plotted 9/11).

And W wants to build the missile defence shield in Poland and Czech??? WTF? To country the threat from Lithiuania?

I don't like Putin, but at least he makes sense unlike most of the current US administration.

I know you're just a troll, but your trolling style is funny. You're like one part stereotypical Russian mobster from a Hollywood movie, one part dirty Frenchman, and one part Cherokee. I read it like this...

When you read it with those accents in your mind, it's pretty funny. Laughing I realize that part of your sock persona is an extreme hatred for America, but try and hate some other things, too. I want to put more accents on your writing. Like, show hatred for Jews, and I can give you a "7-11" employee accent. Start hating on brown people, and I'll match you with an Ontario accent. You could hate on black people, and I would give you a Mississippi accent.

So, do this for me: hate everything. It would make this board a lot more interesting.

Yes, I'm still waiting on stevemcgarrett's solution to the Muslim Question.

Since he's using the term "assimilate" I think he wants to make them Borg... or Republican voters.

Ehn, same thing
