| At the moment I am in Seoul. I have just signed a contract and provided all of the relevant documents for a visa-issuance number for the visa run. I was wondering how long it takes for immigration to issue it. My employer says that it will take only a week, and that they are going to send me to Osaka next week. Does this sound right? |

| That sounds about right. It usually takes immigration about 4 to 6 working days to process it and email to your employer. |

For some reason mine took 4 weeks.  Gently remind your employer to check the status if you don't have it in a week. |

If yours took 4 weeks then you can bet money that the director sat on the application for 3 weeks.
4-6 days is usual and they can often be done in 2. The longest I have heard about is 9 days (application to confirmation number). |

Yeah, that's an office that likes to drag its ass (Busan). Everyone else gets it done in a week. Longer than that and it's time lost because of the school, not Immigration. |

Yes, that is what I should have done. I didn't ask about my number until 3 weeks after the school had received the paperwork. That was a mistake. Only after bugging them everyday about it did I get the number. |

I wouldn't gently remind anyone about something as serious as this matter. If you are working illegally, you are breaking the law and immigration can and just might throw the book at you. What does that mean? That means if you are teaching without the E2 visa stamp or at the very least a visa issuance number, you can go to jail, get a 2mil fine that you yourself have to pay for, get deported at your own expense and barred from entering Korea for three years. Do Korean employers care what will happen to you? NO!!! Chances are they will pay some small fine or bribe the immigration official with a little soju and greenbacks. Meanwhile you will be treated as a common criminal whose no better than a serial killer. Also, you can be sure your sweet new employer will not pay you ten won of your salary. Why? Because by law they don't owe you anything but a boot out the door. See ya.
In Korea, it is best to be very assertive. In the west you can play Mrs. sweetie pie, but this is the east. In the east, things are different, very different. Don't trust anyone here! Watch your own back because there's no one here to watch it for you. Being nicey nicey won't help either. I tell you, if I were waiting on a visa run with any employer past one week, I'd be all over that in hurry and/or I'd be looking for another employer. |
