Australia Will Send 375 Extra Troops to Afghanistan (Update1)
By Gemma Daley
April 10 (Bloomberg) -- Australian Prime Minister John Howard said he will send an extra 300 ground troops and 75 air force personnel to Afghanistan to help NATO forces counter Taliban insurgents.
``There has been a deterioration of the security situation in Afghanistan,'' Howard told reporters in Canberra. ``It is necessary we send this additional commitment.''
Supporters of the Taliban regime that was ousted by a U.S.- led coalition in 2001 are waging a guerrilla war against President Hamid Karzai's government and international troops. NATO expects an offensive by insurgents and has appealed to allies to commit more resources and end restrictions on where their soldiers are deployed.
Australia currently has 550 soldiers in Afghanistan, including 110 personnel belonging to a CH-47 Chinook helicopter detachment that provides logistical support to coalition partners, according to the Defense Department's Web site.

A welcome gesture. My only worry is can Australia sustain the committment? The offer would be detrimental should it only lead to increased war weariness in Australia. Admittedly, I have no idea what Australia's attitude is towards the situation in Afghanistan.
I will not hold my breath for other NATO countries to reciprocate the gesture. |

I wouldn't get over excited about the breadth and depth of Australian entusiasm for the war on terr'...
It's just some obligatory sabre rattling, and political posturing in the face of an impending election. He took some hits over the issue of the 'Australian Taliban' and the long wait for trail in Guantanamo, but he got some strings pulled to get that resolved.
Still, the opposition are committed to pulling Aus troops out, and the PM's canny enough to be on the right side of the polls. |

Those troops are apparently mostly "Special" forces.
Did Russia send its "special" forces into Afghanistan when they invaded? |

i was under the impression that the opposition wholly supported the troops being in Afghanistan. it's Iraq they want them out of. |
