They divide them into 3 types: certified refurbished, Previously ordered new, and scratch and dent.
" * Previously Ordered New1: Previously-ordered New systems include systems that were shipped out to a customer who opened the box, but decided to return the system without ever using it, although it may have been powered on. How do we know if a customer used the system? All new Dell systems have an End User Software Agreement (EUSA) screen that appears the first time the system is powered on by a customer. Once the EUSA is accepted, the screen never appears again. If this screen is still intact, we know the system has not been used. Previously Ordered New Electronics & Accessories also include products that were shipped out to a customer who decided to return the product without ever opening it. How do we know if a customer used the item? All Dell electronics and accessories are factory sealed with tamper-evident tape. If the tamper-evident tape is unaltered and intact, we know the product has not been used.
* Certified Refurbished: These systems are put through the production process again to ensure they meet all original factory specifications. We also retest each system to ensure excellent quality and workmanship standards. Certified Refurbished systems may have observable cosmetic imperfections, but they will not affect performance. Certified Refurbished Electronics & Accessories are visually inspected and, if necessary, retested to ensure these items function as well as new items.
* Scratch & Dent: Sometimes brand new or refurbished items have considerable cosmetic blemishes that do not impact performance. Whenever this happens, they are sold as Scratch & Dent items. This is a great option to save money while maintaining the reliability of Dell Outlet's rigorous rebuilding and retesting process. " |

If you really want a true bulletproof Dell, don't buy the Dimension Line,, buy the Optiplex systems.
I used to work for Dell. The Dimensions are just intel motherboards while the Optiplexs are engineered by Dell and sold mainly to businesses. Easier to maintenance because you don't need any tools to fix anything (hardly).
Dell's strength was selling to corporate with the Optiplex boxes. I wouldnt touch a Dimension. |

As you'll see, they add addtional tax on the final price. They can still be a good deal (especially notebooks). |
