Hey hey,
I'm looking at changing my cell phone since mine is so beat up.
I have Lg monthly service and I heard that they have some pretty amazing deals if you trade your old phone in and commit to a year.
Anyone have any phone recommendations?
Know any killer deals? |

Some of those deals are not applicable to foreigners.
Korea started freaking-out that Motorola's Razor became so popular, so they instigated a gov't paid program that will reduce the price of a Korean-made phone (for Koreans only, I hear) if they commit to using that phone for 1, 2, or 3 years.
Talk to more than one store. In typical Korean fashion, if they don't know the answer to something, they just say, "no" or "it's not possible."
Then you go to another store and find out it's possible. |

I tried in vain to change from LG to KTF, just because my cell phone batteries started fading out quicker than normal, and I wanted to see if it was even possible to change companies.
For 75,000, I got a new phone, and a promise that it'd be hooked up in a half-an-hour.
3 hours later, nothing.
I get back to the stand and they inform me that KTF will not sell phones to foreigners who don't have a Korean credit card. That I had a Canadian Mastercard didn't seem to matter. They were nice guys, and had obviously never had to sell anything to foreigners, so they had no idea, but I was p.o.ed. It was a real 'don't forget where you are, round-eyes' moment.
It's even more upsetting because you know it's just because of a few arsehole teachers making long-distance calls on their cell and then skipping the country. Or just plain reneging on their bills.
I belive SK requires you to leave a 200,000 won deposit which you receive when you return the phone, but they don't offer any kind of discount for changing companies. |

You guys are talking about apples and oranges.
To the OP:
If you have been with LG for more than 1 year you can "UPGRADE" your phone and get a discount that can be substancial when you trade your old phone in.
Talk with a few stores. Models and discount prices are fixed but not all stores carry all models.
The rest of you guys are talking about new phones, new accounts or changing companies. Not the same. |

Some stores are very stringent about the trade-in rule, and won't give you anything for your dinosaur. I'm talking about outlet to outlet. A little mom & pop LG centre near my house offered me a 100,000 rebate, but the big service centre in Seomyon didn't offer me anything.
If the original poster wanted a new phone for a reduced price, I listed one more option. It's all good. |

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. I guess I've been with LG for 11 and a half months. I'm going to go in with a Korean friend and what's possible. It seems that I should be able to get a pretty decent new phone for about 100,000. My phone's not a dinosaur, but it's time for something new. |
