So I'm sure that the standard answer of "It varies on what, where, who, and how long you teach, and what college he or she went to" but I was more interested in whether the salaries that one receives as an ESL teacher is comparable to a Korean teacher recently out of college. I remember reading awhile back that ESL teachers make more money than Korean counterparts and that this causes jealousy but I haven't heard anything more than that.

I'm sure the free housing, airfare, OT, and severance aren't standard perks for Korean teachers so I'm just asking about pure monthly salary.

I've met teachers who make between 1.0m and 9.0m / month. Does that help?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. A public school teacher. I'm not too familar with the hagwons in Korea that don't teach English.

Holy smokes I got fast replies... I guess it helps posting a thread in Korea instead of the states.

I saw my school's payroll a few months ago. It ranges from 1.6 to a little under 5 million a month.

I work at an elementary school. I've been told that starting korean teachers fresh out of school make about 1.6 million. But the senior teacher at our school with over 20yrs experience is making over 4 million. This is also a private elementary school, and I don't know if the pay scale is different from a public elementary.

Salaries in our PUBLIC school are similar. The new art teacher (fresh out of uni and hoping to get a home room next year) gets about 1.7 and the old fart across the hall (ready to retire) gets 5m per month.

For comparison, my base salary is 2.4 with extra classes bringing it up to around 3m per month.

The Korean teachers however don't get housing and I do.

With their "teachers training" we get comparable vacation time. I got more than the art teacher and less than the old fart.

BTW, I am looking for a new foreign co-worker...
