|

I want to make one thing clear: This is NOT definitive information.
I have heard from a reliable source that the NEW busan epik contracts will have two very interesting and wonderful changes.
Check it out:
1) Summer camps will no longer be paid.
awesome!
2) Saturday work may start. It is to be decided by the principal at each individual school; Saturday work will pay you an extra 6oooW/hour.
Oh wait! This isn't awesome. This is fucking bullspit! Seriously, you gotta love how EPIK is doing everything in their power to sabotage the program. I mean REALLY, who at the BOE thought that these were the BEST ideas you could come up with. They simply do NOT understand a) foreigners b) the job market; to be talking about options like these.
Good luck to them, say I! They will need it if they have any daydreams that anyone with more than 1 year experience will stay!
Go epik! |

I heard that, with changes in EPIK contract in Busan, there will be a mass Exodus of FTs from that area.
I also heard that teachers considering teaching in Korea may ditch the idea and go some place else. |

So, I wonder how this will effect teachers who have already been working there, and have resigned?
Will they be able to have the terms in their ORIGINAL contracts (grandfather clause), or will they have to take it up the arss?
Yep, Korean mentality at its finest.
"Lets take something that seems to be satisfactory, and phuck it up somehow. That way, we can make people miserable, frustrated, and not want to be here!".
.......Koreans

That would be really harsh.
Are camps usually extra pay? What are they exactly? I know a camp for me (hagwon) would be morning classes where I make money on top of my regular salary.
Saturdays? At 6000 Won/hr? What the hell is that? It's not like foreign teachers are making a mint anyway. What? 20 to 25,000/year?
Come on. Someone's bright idea. |

I'm curious about this too. In the GEPIK contract, you didn't get extra money for camps. They are easier days than normal, if anything.

This seems like a bit of fear-mongering to me. If it's OT, wouldn't they have to pay the standard rate? If it's not OT, then don't think too many FTs will be signing contracts with mandatory unpaid Saturdays in them, so even if they're floating this idea out I'm sure it will get canned when noone wants to sign with them. |

There will always be people who don't know any better.
"Mandatory, unpaid Saturdays".

They'd get a few people. But they won't meet their hiring quota (assuming they actually care to meet it.) |

As it was pointed out, it has not been confirmed.......could be another rumor.
But, it would definatley NOT be the sensible thing to do on Korea's part.

So, what's the point for centralizing EPIK if each POE can consider changes to the contract? |

Hahaha, sounds about right, given the twittish things I've seen come from some in Epik in the past.
But I have to ask, whispers from whom? Who is your source? Please divulge this. |

Guaranteed 100% chance that I and everyone I know will quit the first time anyone even jokingly talks about working Saturdays.
I do summer and winter camps, but I don't get paid anything extra. Not sure what that's about. Also, technically, I'm not with EPIC. |

Why would they expect Assistant FTs to work on Saturdays when Korean teachers don't?
Do Korean teachers work on Saturdays? |

Korean teachers and pupils go to school every 2nd Saturday, morning only.
I think this is the norm? |

he's a friend of mine whose been in EPIK in busan for, i think, over 3 years (maybe 5ish?)
As for the "paid for camps?"
I think it currently works thusly:
Schools can organize camps that teachers must teach. For this they don't get paid. From what i understand, there aren't too many teachers who do this; and fewer of them complain about it.
HOWEVER, sometimes the BOE will CREATE camps and hire teachers for those camps. Those camps are always paid on top of regular salary. A tidy sum too. If I recall, it's about 4 hours a day for 3 weeks for which you'd receive about 1.4-1.6.

Yes, that's currently it. However, I am 95% sure that saturdays are ONLY homeroom days: My teacher doesn't teach saturdays ever but she is required to come in.
I had this question too:
I'd thought that in 2 years all teachers will ONLY be working 5 days a week and that next year there will only be 1 saturday of work a month.
So what's the point in drowning the foreigners?
For what it's worth, I think the Busan version of EPIK is actually called "BEP" , but it's basically the same program. |

I wouldn't be surprised if this rumour is true. If so, it would probably mean that they are just going to pressure the schools to run winter and summer camps. GEPIK and other programs already do this. |
