Hey guys... Does anyone know...
In the military, the rank of warrent-officer... do other people refer to them as MISTER (name), rather than "Warrent-Officer (name)"?
I know normally we call officers, and other NCO's by their rank and name. (Captain Smith, Major Jones, Sargent Thompson) Is there a difference for Warrent Officers?
I ask because I got stumped by one of my students today. I've never heard it, but I thought I'd ask. |

| From a teacher who spent 10 years in the military.... you can use both. There are 5 ranks of warrent officers, and either Warrent officer Smith, or Mr. Smith, or even Warrent is acceptable. |

You need a vote for all of the above.
When I was in the forms of address were (and still are):
The etiquette of addressing Warrant Officers is as follows (assuming a member named Bloggins):
* Warrant Officer initially as "Warrant Officer Bloggins" or "Warrant Bloggins", thereafter as "Warrant"; except in foot guards regiments, initially as "Colour Sergeant Bloggins", thereafter as "Colour Sergeant".
* Petty Officer 1st Class initially as "Petty Officer Bloggins" or "PO Bloggins", thereafter as "PO".
* Chief Petty Officer 1st/2nd Class initially as "Chief Petty Officer Bloggins" or "Chief Bloggins", thereafter as "Chief". The distinction between 1st and 2nd class (for both Chiefs and POs) is usually only made during formal awards, promotions or other presentations.
* Master Warrant Officer initially as "Master Warrant Officer Bloggins", thereafter as "Sir" or "Ma'am" by subordinates, and as "Master Warrant Officer" by superiors. May also be addressed as "Sergeant-Major" if s/he holds that appointment.
* Chief Warrant Officer initially as "Chief Warrant Officer Bloggins" by subordinates, thereafter as "Sir" or "Ma'am"; "Mr. Bloggins" by superiors; and, if s/he holds the title of Regimental Sergeant-Major, "RSM" by his/her Commanding Officer. |

Warrant Officer ranks are as follows:
Warrant Officer 1
Chief Warrant Officer 2
Chief " " 3
Chief 4
Chief 5
For 2-5, you can also call them "Chief". I called them "Chief". |

| In Canada it's just Warrant ______________ or the shortened 'warrant' never sir. Sir is used for master warrant oFficers and chief warrant officers only. You'd call them 'Sir' unless you were requesting their attention or talking about them in which case it would be Master Warrant _____________ or Chief Warrant _________. |

In Canada it goes (for the army)
Warrant Officer
Master Warrant Officer
Chief Warrant Officer
They are not called "Mister" when on official duty.
You can call them WO Smith or Warrant Smith when they are Warrant Officers |

In Oz we have two classes of Warrant Officers. WO2 and WO1. A WO1 can also be a Regimental Sargeant Major or RSM. We would address them as Warrant Officer or moron. A WO2, may also be addressed as Sargeant Major. |

Based on the varied responses so far, it seems that this phrase is too vague. It would be better to specify which country and which service (army, navy, etc.) you are referring to. Even within the US military, the different services often have very different protocols when it comes to things such as this. |

Officially, you call them "Mr." or "Mrs./Ms."
Around the shop, you call them "Chief"
But you must be careful because in the Navy, Senior Petty Officers are also called "Chiefs" too. |

| In the US mil at least, it depends on who is addressing the WO. If enlisted, Sir. If OC (Officer Class), then it's Mister. Chief is a more familiar address than can be used by subordinates in the unit, and senior personnel outside the unit. |
