I prefer the dryer wit, fast paced sarcasm and directness of Leno's humour to the obvious, inane caberet, pantomime-esque quality that Letterman has. You know - like when he tells a really obvious or dumb joke and makes a big show of it... I know he's attempting a certain type of irony (look at us laughing at how bad we are..) and always using 'zany' visual effects and stunts... Not that I don't like Letterman (big props for the Great Moments in Presidential Speaches segment) but if I had to sway one way or the other, Leno would get my vote hands down. I'd take Craig Ferguson's show over both of them, but feel he deoesn't belong in the same category.

Leno or Letterman and WHY?

Cool

I prefer Letterman, just because I think he's funnier. To me, Leno's humor seems to be that of what you would find on Full House. I admit that some of his stuff is funny, but.......I have to go with Letterman.

Why do you think Leno is / was lame...?

Letterman's like a sad uncle. the way he mock pats his sides when he tells a bad joke... sheesh....

I've actually been to a taping of the Letterman show. Although, Letterman is funny, I prefer Leno. I just think he has funnier stuff. Plus, Letterman copied Leno's "Headlines" with "Small town news". I love Letterman's top ten though.

Letterman's more of a natural funnyman. I think at times even he doesn't know what's going to come out of his mouth.
Leno's more of a student of the game who made himself funny over time. He better understands the science of comedy. He's got a huge repertoir of gags, and knows exactly how and when to use them. His phrasing and timing is impeccable.
It's hard to choose. Leno makes me laugh more often, but Letterman makes me laugh harder. I guess I'd go with the natural.
(And I also prefer Craig Ferguson).

i usually only watch the monologues, but i would have to say leno. sometimes i just don't get letterman's humor. (having sue come up to him and them scream horrible insults at him after he refuses? comedic value decreases after the 20th time.)

connan will get me falling out of my chair with laughter sometimes....

Comedy is about making people laugh. Letterman had an edge. Not saying he has it now. But when he was on NBC he did. Leno is unfunny and about as edgy as Full House. Leno never was funny.

Conan O'Brien is so vastly funnier than either one it's appalling that he's on at a worse time slot. Leno is like comedy cancer. Or comedy about cancer. Possibly the unfunniest comedian to reach his stature. Letterman used to be funny (remember Big Ass Ham?) and is still funny occasionally.

Bingo. Leno was NEVER funny. Absolutely one of the worst comedians ever.

I love Great Moments in Presidential History and Dave is twice the interviewer Jay is when David is really interested.

Leno's humor isn't cerebral or acerbic enough.

I also like it when Allan Calter, "Big Red," goes on a rant.

Leno kisses ass too much...and I just can't stomach Craig Ferguson w/his fart jokes, etc.

I do have to confess to only having seen either comedian on their current late night shows that show on AFN...

Sadly I can't look back at previous material through their careers and compare.

Agreed. I don't like Craig Ferguson either. Conan O'Brien is the funniest.
