NEW DELHI (AFP) - When Monsanto decided to take Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser to court for using its seeds, the US biotech giant didn't know it was creating a folk hero for the anti-GM crop movement

Wow! Isn't that something! I personally don't have a problem with GM crops, but I do have a big problem with copyrighting seeds. Also, this terminator seed could turn into a nightmare. Why should we plant seeds that are sterile? Starving a population by withholding seeds could be a way of controlling the "unruly masses". |

As far as I know, there's no patent on navel oranges, and they're not grown from seeds.
Edit: Apparently Monsanto has pledged not to commercialise terminator gene technology. This I did not know. |

I do have a problem with the GMO corporations who seem to be trying to impose their type of crops on us and they may end up reducing the genetic diversity of the crops we have in the world. We don't need less diversity. I am sure GM has some scientific merits, but I am not sure this promotes food security. |

You grow it, you own it. It seems pretty simple, no?
The whole idea that someone can own genes is just proposterous. It has already been abused. I remember seeing on TV about 10 or 15 years ago something about a man whom researchers somehow found out that he had a mutated gene that could be used to cure a disease (can't remember the disease). The man was more than happy to provide additional DNA samples to the researchers. Well, unbeknownst to him, the researcher patented his mutated gene and made millions selling it to other researchers. All he got was a couple of hundred bucks for his expenses.
PS. Imagine that GM plants begin pollinating non-GM plants. Before you know it, all the farmers could liable to pay compensation to the patent holder. |
