Serendipity Beach, Cambodia or Phuket and Ko Phi Phi - which location do you think is best for some R&R, food, and doing some day trips out in the boat (i.e., snorkelling)?
I like Southern Thailand a lot. But I've been thinking of checking out Serendipity Beach next week. Not sure if it's going to be worth the pain to get there, though. Phuket is easy to get to as I'll be starting out from Bangkok.
Anyone here been to both places that can comment on how they compare? |

| Snorkeling?? Why don't you just take a plane to Koh Samui, and the second you get there, go to Koh Panyang. On Koh Panyang you can snorkel. It's the most beautiful place in Thailand I've been to so far, just make sure you get out of Hat Rim and to the more isolated areas (bottle beach). Then go to Koh Tao by ferry. That's supposed to be the prime place these days. Check it out. You can island hop on those 3 islands for just pennies and it is only a half hour trip from Pnayang to Samui, maybe longer to Koh Tao. I wouldn't go back to Phuket after going to that island group. |

Koh Phi Phi sucks.
Beautiful, nay, stunning natural beauty.
BUT, tons of dreadlocked hippies sititng around in bars called 'Hippy Bar.' It's almost like a kind of 'Thailand 18 - 30's club.'
ATM's all over the place, and people trying to sell diving trips..
Half finished construction sites abound...
Very busy place.
The sea is stunning but full of big boats and yatch's and day trip boats...
I agree with Koh Samui and Phan nyang (sp)
They have their share of psuedo hippies and maccy d's etc, but the islands are also big enough for you to be able to get away from all that. The iterior of Koh Samui is sumptuosly stunning, gorgeous jungle and waterfalls, lush coconut palm plantations... plenty of quiter beaches and small villages etc. Wonderful food....
Phuket is cool too, but in a different way. The beaches are not as nice as Samui and they all have roads directly behind them, so you can hear and see the traffic, which sucks to me...
However if you want a place with variety to explore, then it's perfect.
The city itself has beautiful sino-Portuguese architecture and amazing Thai/Chinese food and also cinemas...
It's so big that it would take you a full week to see the whole lot if you rented a scooter ... lots of temples and things like that.... Pathong is good if you like sleazy Itaewon style nightlife magnified times 100 with peeing shows and trannies etc... plenty of day trips from the island available at good prices, - Koh Phi Phi, James bond Island, were ones I did...
Not sure about diving at Phuket itself but they do excursions to some of the best spots in the andaman sea...
More to do than Samui or Phnagyan, but it's so big that you don't really get that island 'away from it all' feel.... but if you want variety, it's a good place... |
