Why? Have you ever witnessed more uptight people in your life, anywhere? Plus, 90% of the jobs have people doing 1-2 hours worth of work, but having to stretch out that work til 10PM, pretending to look busy. That could drive me to suicide.

AH, top of all OCED countries... not ALL countries. That I can swallow. One would think of all nations, third world or war torn nations would rank much higher for suicides.
OECD nations include:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States

Indian women have the Highest in the wolrd according to this site http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn4846

Wasn't there some research carried out on this which showed that the opposite is true?

I googled "highest suicide rate" and found these little tidbits. Looks like Eastern European countries are the most desperate places to be.

Quote:
Highest Suicide Rates in the World
Rank Country Suicides per 100,000 inhabitants per year
1 Lithuania 42.0
2 Russia 37.4
3 Belarus 35.0
4 Latvia 34.3
5 Estonia 33.2
6 Hungaryk 32.1
7 Slovenia 30.9
8 Ukraine 29.4
9 Kazakhstan 28.7
10 Finland 24.3
(BBC)

Quote:
The highest suicide rate in the world has been reported among young women in South India by a new study. The research is of major importance, according to the World Health Organization, as it brings to light Asia's suicide problem.

The average suicide rate for young women aged between 15 to 19 living around Vellore in Tamil Nadu was 148 per 100,000. This compares to just 2.1 suicides per 100,000 in the same group in the UK.

The global suicide rate stands at 14.5 deaths per 100,000, with suicide the fourth leading cause of death in the 15 to 19 age group. However, in the Tamil Nadu study, suicide was the number one cause of death among these adolescents.

Notably, young women were much more likely to kill themselves than young men - the reverse of the rest of the world. In Western countries, men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women.

Quote:
Scotland has the highest suicide rate in the UK, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.

From 1991 to 2004 the suicide rate among men was 50% higher in Scotland than other UK countries, while the rate for women was double that of elsewhere.

During 2002/04 the suicide rate among Scottish men was 30 per 100,000 compared with 22.4 in Wales, 18.3 in Northern Ireland and 16.7 in England.

For Scots women the rate was 10 per 100,000 compared with 5.4 in England.

The figures published in the Health Statistics Quarterly showed the suicide rate among women in Wales was 6 per 100,000 and 5.6 in Northern Ireland.

The report said Scotland's highest rate of male suicide was found in Shetland, Blackpool for England, north Belfast in Northern Ireland and Denbighshire in Wales.

Suicide rates

For women the highest suicide rate in Scotland was found in Glasgow, Camden in England, Conwy in Wales and west Belfast in Northern Ireland.

The rate of suicides is still really high here. South Korea's 24.7 per 100,000 is serious business. What do you all think is the cause of this? I blame it on overwork and overstress. But, that is just at face value. Anyone else have any theories?

Pressure to get into good high schools and universities is a factor for young people, I know that. Also perhaps the lack of feeling of autonomy or personal agency. Feeling that in every decision you make you must be considerate of how your familly percieve your choices, could be a factor too. Social mobility is pretty limited here also. Attitudes to those over 25 and not married.... I'm sure the financial impact of the 90's market crash is still a factor for some...

In a less serious vein, I reckon soju could have a small part to play... the stuff is EVIL.

From what I've been told, Koreans also have a fairly fatalistic outlook on suicide, despite the intervention of Christianity. It's just kinda what you do to not bring shame to your family, self, etc.

I find the reaction to suicides a little different here, too. The victims are always pitied and "understood" after the fact, and family/friends of the victims are mobbed with sympathy. There doesn't seem to be much of a focus on 'the selfishness' as many back home believe.

Back home, although victims/family are mourned/supported, there is always that underlying feeling of 'wrongness' and 'it could have been prevented', or 'the blame game'. There are even those that say something like "screw 'em - I have no sympathy for people who off themselves..." I haven't heard that much (at all) from Koreans.

Here, it's "poor girl" and then move on. The collective mindset is different.

I'm sure once Koreans read that they are #1, they'll be happy.

"Korea #1".....although they wont say for what.
