Although I read this forum quite often for entertainment and information, I haven't had reason to post anything here in the couple years I've been in Korea. I'm now on my in the first month of my third year and for the first time have encountered the problem of kids lying about my behavior.
I'm concerned about the possibility of getting fired, as well as any legal problems I could suffer if the kids start lying about worse things.
The first incident was a mother who called asking why her son shouldn't come to class the next day. He had told her that the foreign teacher said 5th grade students shouldn't come to class the next day. Since I'm still in the first month, I'm still learning their English names. I have no idea what grade they're in. I just laughed it off with my co-teacher and we both forgot about it.
Yesterday I was told one of the students has told her mother that I throw things at her in class. This again is a flat out lie. I can only remember tossing an eraser to a student who asked me for one, which he caught in his hands.
Has anyone else dealt with this before? We don't have cameras in the classrooms. I'm not sure if I'm taking this too seriously, but it seems like if these stories continue there could be problems down the road. |

It sounds like you work at a school / hagwon where the kids have figured out they can get away with making up BS about the FT. If it's a matter of parental complaints, call them on it right away. Which parent? Which kid? Call that kid into the staff room immediately and interrogate him / her in front of the KTs. They'll likely wilt right away and the message will get out that it doesn't work. This is likely also an institutional problem and Id send out feelers to your boss and supervisor that if the kids are making stuff up about you youll consider leaving. |

Ohhh yeah..........these kids will lie through their little kimchi ridden teeth.
For example, the day before yesterday I had a student say "phuck you"............lied about it, Korean teachers did NOTHING............I was fuming.
The only time a Korean is not lying is when their lips are not moving.

Those Koreans really have it in for ole dumbfan, don't they? And it's really unfair, given the pleasant persona he projects here at Dave's. |

Well, buy one and set it up. That ought to settle it. |

I think he may be saying that you attract this sort of treatment. If I am reading it correctly, he may also be implying that if your personality in school is like your personality here, it may be deserved.

OR..........it could be that the student said "phuck you", lied about it and simply got away with it..................
I don't eventhink I taught that particular student......................
So, although I do appreciate your input, your assumptions COULD be on the right path............................OR.........................it could be that the students realized from the BEGINNING that the K-teachers were not going to do anything to enforce discipline and keeping in line, and it has been a battle since.

No, .........it was the day before yesterday.
Now, if you dont' have anything better to do then to take jabs at me, then I suggest you quite pussyfooting around, and find something else to do.
If you really think you are being a tough guy on the internet, then you are not doing yourself any justice.
Even if you win, you are still a retard. Now, I'm not calling you that, but if you keep making jabs at me for no reason...well......then you're a 'tard.

Pak yu man or whatever!! So, it's completely acceptable for kids to be swearing at teachers or any other persons for that matter. Wow!!!!!!!! I like your philosphy towards educating the youth of today. If that's your attitude go and join the British educational system. You'll love it there, you will be sworn at everyday. Oh, by the way phuck you!!! You twanker!!!

Great response. When I hear Brits talk about their educational system these days it's just so hard not to break out laughing. |

OR...it could be that the kids treat you the way YOU let them.
If any kid at my school EVER said that to me (regardless of whether I teach them or not) he'd been on his knees in the corner for the next ten minutes. And then I would make him apologize to me and write out (neatly) 100 times "I will not swear at Mr. Conservative"
And if any K-teacher tried to interfere...I'd tear them a new one.
It's not like you have anything to lose...you're leaving soon, correct?
If the K-teachers will not enforce discipline, then YOU will have to. And if you don't the kids WILL walk all over you. Your choice. But don't complain about it if you facilate the process. That kid should have NEVER gotten away with it, even if you had to stand guard over him in the corner. It would have sent a message to every other kid. As it stands you sent a message all right...but I don't think you like what it says.
Sorry man, but you messed up on this. |

Right...........make the kids do some physical punishment, and escalate the situation here..........
First off, dont' presume to know how I handle situations like those. I have dealt with them sense I've been here, and I lay the law down from the beginning. What helps, is having korean coteachers how have the spine to back you up......and actually give a shite..............
Normally, I would explain to the student that it is a nice thing to say...not many of them really have an idea of what "*beep* you" means (using my example).
I don't resort to physical punishment as a first move.
