Correct me if I'm wrong, but on my last pay I was deducted more than usual. My boss showed me a letter from NHIC showing that it's now 4.77% of which I pay half. Before it was 4.48%. This started with the new year. It's not much, but I just want to know if anyone else has noticed this. |

Thanks for that. The guy there was really helpful. I was actually more curious about how much has been contributed since I started paying. He was able to inform me, at first, about what my monthly contributions should be. I knew that it was 2.24%, but his quote was a little less than 1000 Won more than what I pay. The figures seem off a little. He was able to verify for me that payments have been made since the beginning (I'm assuming the total he gave me of what I've paid up to date was my contribution - I'll reconfirm that tomorrow) are all up to date. I started to ask him if the rate changed from 2.24, but I was in class and didn't have time. I'll call him back with that question tomorrow. He may not know that it changed and would have to verify. That new amount would only apply to January 2007 and beyond (so, February's pay). I saw the letter, albeit briefly, that my boss had from NHIC. It seems that it would be too small an amount to make much of a difference.
It's funny how it seems I'm paying a little less than what I should be, but I really only care about whether it's being paid or not. I guess I don't care about 10,000 Won at the end of the year. Still strange though.
At least he had the name of my hagwon, etc. And right around the right amount I should've been (and am) paying. I do, by the way, have my health booklet, but it's always good to check these things out.
Funny thing is that I'm always paying for the previous month and not the current month (i.e. I get paid February 5th, but I'm paying for January's coverage). Wonder if that would have any effect on my coverage if I were in need of it. I guess it's alright. |

Yeah, I think it changed. From what I remember, it's 4.77%. So you should be paying half that (2.385%, up 0.145%). I'm not sure these amounts are exact though. I think it has to do with salary ranges, so it could be a little less, exactly, or a little more than that. |

Yes, the rates have gone up and yes the rates for both the National Health Insurance and for the Pension Tax are not exact percentages. The rates are determined by finding which bracket you are in. The rates are exact for those whose salary level falls at the midpoint of the bracket where the calculation was made. Others will find that their percentage rate will be a little higher or lower depending on where your pay level falls within the bracket. I haven't checked all the brackets, but it seems that for most people your health insurance co-pay should increase about 1,000 to 2,000 won. |

Well, there you have it. Basically, if you're paying around 50,000/month and you have your booklet, there's nothing to worry about. |
