I really like Gunter & The Three Alley Pub. Don't care for Gecko's that much, though I must admit that I love Gecko's Garden very much! Macondo's though is number one!

The ones I do know, I don't dislike(even Stompers, which holds a special, rat-infested, cobweb-encroached place in my itty bitty widdle heart). The ones I don't know, they probably ain't that bad. I'm not big on Gecko's, though, whichever one it is that is always bloated with people to the point that I can't even move.

I never cared for Geckos either for the longest time.. then one night somewhat recently one of my friends insisted i meet him there.. i sat down and started talking to quite a few really interesting people.. and now i'm kind of a recent convert.. however, i wouldn't generally want to be there if i didn't know anyone.. but if u know a few people already its not bad.. its kind of being at a big house party.. great if u know some of the people.. sucks bigtime if you don't.. but somehow you end up walking out of there having met a few new people somehow or another..

However my first few impressions weren't that great either.. it just looked like alot of really good-looking men (i.e. competition for any woman's attention) and highly undesireable.. but now i don't mind so much at all.. some interesting conversations i've had in that place.. and somehow i've managed to meet a few women as well for conversation which was kind of nice..

Here is a funny story about Joker Red.

The first time I came to Korea, there was this Korean girl..let's call her...hmm.."Sehi".

Anyway, "Sehi" says "we go Jokkoled ba". I ask her "Chocolate Bar?"

She says "Yes. Jokkoled ba."

So we walk and walk and finally come to the 7-11 on the corner, and I say I will get the chocolate bar. I come out and she is grabbing my hand around the corner and then points up "Not Jokkaleduh ba.......Jokkaleduh ba"

Still to this day when I hear Koreans say "Joker Red Bar" I think "Chocolate Bar"...

Ahhh, Stompers. Proves that kitch, sleaze and filth are immortal. Heck, when the place burned down in 1994, they rebuilt it EXACTLY the same way. I think they even added extra dirt. I always hit it while I am in Seoul, what a dive. I love dives.

I still love Nashville. Why? Because in the ten years I have been going in and out of Seoul it is still EXACTLY the same.

Three Alley is cool but gets too packed on weekends.

Geckos is nice but the last time I was there the food was not great.

And let's not forget the worst of then all..Polly's Soju Kettle. Watch GI's fight! I used to booze it up there with my GI neighbours years ago, before I was married. A nice lot of guys.

Nashville is still great for the food, best beef in Korea and as CT said it hasn't changed in the 7 years I've been in and out of Seoul. I do miss the kicker bar though, Koreans line dancing was funny even funnier than Koreans salsa dancing.

I prefer 3 Alley. Gunther is cool, beer selection is great, clientelle is a little better, spent a lot of time there during the WC. Yeah it gets a little crowded on Sat when I've been there

Agree Stompers is utter *****...
Hollywoods i liked when it was dank and sleazy, now they have done it up and it looks stupid..people went to hollywood to pick up..now limelight is the place to go, and unless Hollywoods drops door cover, tehy will be out of business..

Matmata is my favourite club, small, sweaty and full of atmosphere;just like a house club should be although the music ca get a bid dodgy at times..in truth the music policy at most clubs in korea is a bit uninspired...

anyone ever go to those happy liquor pia joints?1800 won for a pint of cass..great place to get hammered..
and are there any licensing laws here? There seems to be so many empty bars..literally thousands of them in Sinchon alone..how do they make a profit?
why are there so many here???

I can't figure that one out either.. and Shinchon is the GOOD place to be!! It seems throughout the entire city there are HOFS everywhere but nowhere the amount of people like Shinchon.. for example, even where i live and work which is about 15 minute walk to the subway station.. there must be 25 hofs or so.. then I go the subway station and there are probably another 75 or so around.. and the weird thing is most of them are exactly the same and nothing to them rather than nice theme and name - you know what i mean.. all marketing an image but completely failing to deliver with anything of value inside.. how do they keep afloat like that? i can't figure that one out either..

I'm thinking back home of great bars and ideas and everything else.. that actually did have an audience and such and still couldn't quite make it.. and here.. its the opposite.. no target audience, nothing distinguishable, half are empty, and they just stick around for who knows how long - at least it seems like that..

That being said.. everytime I go to Shinchon which isn't as often anymore as I don't live there anymore.. things go change around fairly quickly.. so who knows.. but still how does one close down and the next one start up almost exactly the same?
