Judging by what I see here at Dave's there seem to be a lot of Canadians doing the English teaching in Korea. Why is that? I wonder. Anyone can understand the American-Japanese symbiosis: the Americans nuked the Japanese and they worshipped them as gods. Then later the Japanese built better quality cars at a lower price than Detroit could ever hope to build, and the Americans worshipped them as gods.
Don't get me wrong about the Canadians, I like them well enough, with their little mapleleaf flags on their backpacks and inch-thick wool socks, and the way the eastern ones say,"oat an aboat'. I like their bacon too.
But why have they taken to Korea so? |

Reason #1: to escape from taxes
Reason #2: Americans have the military, Canadians have English Teaching |

OP- look beyond such simplistic notions about the US and Japan. There's a lot of mutual respect between the US and Japan. Nothing wrong with that. BTW, OP, look up this man- W. Edwards Deming.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming
He was a brilliant man who has greatly influenced business management in Japan and the US.
Why so many Canadians here? They'll deny it, but it's their high taxes and the lousy Canadian economy, too. Plus, being paid in Won gives them a real advantage over those being paid in those oh-so pretty bills that drop in value before they can run to the bank to deposit them. |

| To make decent money and escape the taxes would be the biggest reasons for Canuks working esl jobs in Asia. The currency/economy argument has nothing to do with it, in fact the Canadian dollar has been quite strong in the last year against the American dollar. I think Canadians also like to travel internationally, escape to milder climates and like many nationalities many young people fresh out of university don't always have great job prospects and esl offers money, travel and adventure on a short or long term basis. |

| I'm a Canadian who is about to become an ESL teacher and I've been asking myself why I want to go and I've come up with a two answers. One to get paid to travel the world and second to pay off my student debt. If I leave I can pay it off in a couple of years but if I stay it'll take around 8 to 9 years, that's quite a difference. I for one don't want to be oin my 30's paying for something that I did 7 or 8 years ago. |
