Here's an e-mail I received recently from the British Embassy in Korea:

Thank you for your e-mail. I am afraid that you are not entitled to claim back any of the pension you have paid. However, there is a way that you can receive the pension contributions which you have been paid in Korea. If you have been paid the pension contributions for over 10 years in Korea, you can receive them after you have retired at the age of 60 (as the Korean retirement age is 60).

For more information, the Convention for Double Taxation (Pension Contributions) Prevention is dealt directly between Inland Revenue (IR) in the UK and the NPC in Korea. Therefore, the Embassy is not in a position to directly get involved in this matter.

The Embassy advises you to contact the NPC ( web site at www.npc.or.kr telno. 02 2240 1090 & 02 3433 5727 ), which is a Korean agency and has their own peosonnel handling private inquiries.

Regards,

WS Lee (Ms) , Vice Consul

Yep, another example of being royally shafted by the wonderful British establishment. The question is; where does my ching ching go? I guess to the "CHAVS", which means there is no escape from the nanny state. To coin a phrase: your damed if you do, and your damed if you don't.

God bless em- but at least they are not getting the plus 20% tax out of me.
