I've been playing around with the idea of teaching in Busan for quite a while now. It's causing me tons of undue stress because of what i'd be giving up in the U.S. job, girlfiend, etc. So, I've come to the conclusion that the only way to make a sane decision is to visit first.
I'm thinking about going in May. I'd like to get in touch with some fellow teachers who could possible show me around or offer a couch for the night. I'd only be able to come for about 5 days and would like to see a little of Japan as well. From what I've read Haeundae Beach would be the ideal spot. If someone from there could offer some help I'd appreciate it. |

You are planning better than most people who just jump right in without visiting. The best thing you could do is apply for jobs and then see the school and housing while you are in Busan, though if you want to take your time moving this may not go over well with a prospective employer (he'll/she'll want you soon). Check out the Lonely Planet Korea, too, to navigate and catch the major sites. The beach would a prime location, but in reality, you won't live on the beach.
I'm not in Busan, so I couldn't meet you.
A 5 day trip? And you want to see Japan? That's stretching it. Stick with Korea, see Busan and Seoul, and wait to see Japan when you have at least 5 days for it. Tokyo itself can take a week to see. |

Visit PNU during your stay. You will have to dine at the Turkish restaraunt. We also have Indian, American Chinese, Real Sushi joints, three movie theaters, lots of mountains, martial arts dojos, several Korean language schools, a local university, a river to run by, lots of bastketball courts.
And if you enjoy a beer or two, without fights, there are four Western bars within a two minute walk from each other.
Hauneda is nice, especially with the Mexican joint there, but you only get the beach for two months out of the year, and even then, it is too crowded.
As you can see, I couldnt spend a year eating just Korean food . |

May is a nice time to viist. What are youlooking for in a locale? Do you want a quiet, naturey area or a more happening place like PNU or Haeundae. I live in Haeundae, and love it. Good food, decent bars, and of course the beach. You can use it about six months a year at least (since swimming would cause you to grow a third arm, water temp is nothing to worry about). If you haven't alreayd discovered it, go on over to pusanweb.com and check out al the guides and the forums on there for more info. |

Would 3 days in Busan give me a good idea of what I'm getting into?
As far as a locale, I'm just looking for a comfortable place to live with a lot of things for a (non korean speaking) foreigner to do. Good nighlife and access to other nice parts of the city wouldn't hurt either.
Would anyone recommend PNU or another area of Busan over Haeundae?

ANother area to consider is the Kyungsung Uni/Pukyoung Uni/Gwangalli area. Its the next beach over from haeundae towards teh city center. Its got a lot of restaurants nad bars as well. Near the beach. and closer to the city center than Haeundae.
PNU is great for bars and food, but its a bit far from the ocean for me.
So, if you want a lot of forieng friendly stuff, try PNU, Haeundae, or Kyungsung/Gwangalli area. Seomyeon also has some stuff, but its so crowded, I wouldn't want to live there. |

A wise idea. Busan is hell!! I lived there for 1 month but quit and left because I hated the place. Daegu is much much better. |

Cuz, don't listen to that guy. If you are going to move to Korea, Busan is a good choice. Living in Haeunade "New Town" is cush. Tons of foreigners and western stuff, still pretty Korean tho. Easily accessable to pretty much anything and everywhere you want, esp by Korean standards. Plus you have "the" killer beach, and Gwanganli beach is like ten minutes away. That place might even be better.
I got nothing against Daegu. It might rock, it might not. I just haven't spent any time there. They do have costco tho. Big points for that.
If money and time aren't an issue, you should definately check it out before you move here. |

What? Why only six months? If you are not concerened with swimming I fail to see why the beach isn't a year round attraction.
I actually prefer Haeundae in the winter. Less crowded. Summer is too hot to stroll along the boardwalk.
The beach is the thing I miss most about Busan. That soothing blue sea. |

July and August are too crowded. Walking on the beach isn't fun when there are another 100,000 people there with you.
December-February to cold to walk. I'm a baby when it comes to cold weather, so the cold, windy winters of Busan mean I don't get out much.
So, maybe I should have said 7 months. Either way, Busan is the best place to live in Korea |
