Hi all,
I am trying to plan a course of study in Germany, and figure that the costs involved would make teaching for a year or two in S.Korea a good idea.
I had a couple of questions, as reading some of the horror stories on this site makes me kind of nervous about signing myself away for a year or more.
1) What are the places i can generally trust - I heard Hagwons seem to be more trouble than theyre worth, is this true? Are they the Korean equivlent of public schools or what?
2) Wheres a good city/town to teach thats quite small (pref. under 1 million pop.) but perhaps also a bit lively? Im living in Berlin at the moment, and it just feels too big sometimes...
3) Whats a decent salary, should one be satisfied as a newbie with 2 mil, and would I be able to save half of it?
4) How much is health insurance usually covered?
5)Is the Korean language at all grammatically similar to Japanese?
6) Is it possible to start in April, or do all contracts go from the start or middle of the year?

Anyway, i guess thats all the questions i have for now. If anyone can shed some light i'd be really grateful

Very vague question....Hakwons are private institutions and hence are a very diverse lot. You have excellent hakwons and horrible hakwons. They are not the equivalent of public schools as public schools are the equivalents of..well...public schools!

Plenty of smaller cities around. I heard good things about Daejon for example.

If you are a newbie with the bare minimum of qualifications and no experience then 2.0-2.2 is your range.

Would you be able to save half? Depends on you and your lifestyle.

You pay 50% the employer pays 50% (most cases).

Hakwons hire all year round.

Pblic schools hire now (Jan-Feb) and in the late summer. Some government programs start recruiting in the spring (EPIK) for placement in August-Sept.
