I've had a pretty nasty cold for almost a week now. All of my co-workers tell me to go to the hospital and get a shot. I'm a bit leery.
I'm allergic to penicillin and am not sure what exactly is in these "miracle" shots. Does anyone know?
I've tried everything the pharmacist has given me and nothing seems to stop the symptoms, although one did make me hallucinate.

The name is go puh re. it's in a blue box. The pharmacist told me to take 2, 3 times a day. In the morning I take 1 and in the evening I take 1. When I come home I take 2 and try to go to bed--that's when the minor hallucinating started.
I don't live in Seoul so the one site won't help me  . I couldn't get the first link to open...
I might go to the dr and take an English speaking friend. Although I have a feeling she doesn't believe I'm allergic but thinks I'm afraid of shots. That's why I'm want to know what's in it. I guess I can go and if I feel uncomfortable refuse to drop trow. |

| I had the same issue about a year ago, went to a Korean doctor and got a "booster shot" in the rear. I fell asleep about an hour later, and when I woke up I felt tons better and ended up recooping in just a day or two. Give it a shot... |

No, don't be an idiot. Back home, would you go to the hospital because you had a cold ? I think not.
The 'miracle shot' is B12 with analgesics... cant' hurt... and it makes you feel good. However, your body's immune system will kill the virus by it's self without help. Nothing you take will speed up the process of fighting the infection. You can only aleviate the symptoms.
Ks swear by 'the shot' (they also believe in fan death):
K1: I have a cold.
K2: Go to the hospital and get a shot.
K1: Good idea.
... K1 gets his shot... low-and-behold his cold clears up.
K2: Did it work?
K1: Yes... that shot cured me of my cold!

Antibiotic booster shots vary significantly:
in a US hospital it could be; Ancef (cefazolin), Rocephin (ceftriaxone), Cefzil (cefotaxime), Aztreonam (cefoxitin), Vanco (vancomycin), etc, etc, etc...

| Actually, Cruisemonkey, our GP back home in the UK does suggest that if a cold lasts for longer than a week and shows no signs of a recovery, then you should go to them for a check up, just to rule out that it isn't something more serious................ |

I've always heard you should wait 2 weeks for a cold to clear up on it's own. That's when I would break down and head to the International Clinic at the teaching hospital in Itaewon.
However, it might not be a simple cold you have. One option is that you have allergies. The sheer amount of junk in the air can bring on allergies in someone who's never had them before. Allergies you won't get rid of, but you can treat the symptoms.
A second option is a sinus infection which goes back to the sheer amount of junk theory of breathing. You'll have to get antibiotics for that and then you'll have to start rinsing your sinuses out with salt water for keep from getting more.
My third option is sinus trouble from the weather changing. We've had some wacky pressure changes lately and that can be tough on the sinuses. Those kinds of problems start when you're about 25 if you're going to have them. However they are the easiest to treat. Drink hot liquids. That's it. Clears everything up by warming up your sinuses.
Try hot liquids and rest for another week and if that doesn't work, then go to the International Clinic at the teaching hospital in Itaewon. Dr Yoon is a smart guy with good English and he won't give you any medication you don't need.

| Bare - 2 weeks if you show signs that it is recovering but if the cold remains the same after a week, and you are feeling no better whatsoever, then you should go to them. Normally a cold starts to dwindle after 4 or 5 days... |

Is Doctor Yoon new? Is the International Clinic above a conveniant store? I need knee surgery and the I.C. will only refer somewhere. Do you know which hospital would be good? I heard the S.N.U.(green line/south near the University station I think) hospital would be good but I'm not sure where or how to get there. |

| if it is a cold do not get antibotics, they serve no purpose. a cold is a virus and antibotics cure bateria infections, so unless you have a chest infection (and you would know for sure if you had one) then it will do nothing. Natural antivirals- garlic, manuka honey (fat chance of getting it here tho), plus a few others that i can think of at the moment just do a google search |
