stupid phone question

so after two years here i have finally moved into the next century and got a cell phone. when i got it i received three months service but my little message that tells me how much money i have left before i must put more won on the phone says the service expires in march. how do i get more service? do i have to pay a monthly service charge?
obviously it is a pay as you go phone.

Where did you get your phone to begin with?
