can anyone recommend a good place in seoul to buy a sofa, couch, or futon? the furniture in my apartment sucks right now, and i'm tired of waiting for someone at my complex to leave something good out by the dumpster...

Check the thread on Second Hand stores in the Buy and Sell forum.

The used furniture places are around. They usually have piles of old stuff in front of them, but back inside is the nice stuff.

I got a very nice combo set (full couch and big single chair) for W220,000. If you speak Korean, you can figure out where the closest one to you is by calling them. If not, have a K friend help.

www.auction.co.kr
www.gmarket.co.kr

Nothing else even comes close -- delivered right to your door or assembled in the room you want it in for a little more. Ask a friend or coworker to help you buy it. Reimburse them if you have to, or just do a bank transfer to the store's account (that's how I do it). There's so much selection on there, and the prices absolutely kill the prices you'll find in stores. I bought a folding couch/bed for 160,000 there. It cost me well over 250,000 at a local store -- same exact thing. I couldn't believe the savings.

Do a search on 쇼파 (Sofa) or 소파베드 (Sofa bed).

Every Korean knows about these sites. One warning though: CHECK THE SIZE DIMENSIONS BEFORE YOU BUY. Do not just rely on photos! They often try to make some things look much larger than they actually are.

These sites are killing the local small retailers, because Koreans buy everything from them now. Wal-mart kills off the small stores in the USA. Here, it's online shopping killing off the small stores. I see there's an Xbox 360 Core edition for 233,000. Hmmm.....
