I know it has probably been asked a thousand time but a friend and I are having a discussion:
He's on an E-2 and has been told he has two weeks "grace period" to leave after his visa expires. Is this true? Or must he leave right away?

If his visa is expiring.... he has until midnight on the last day indicated on his ARC to be cleared through customs/immigration on his way OUT or he will be in an overstay position.
He CAN get a short extension by going to the immigration office with his ARC, passport and TICKET in hand. They will extend his period of sojourn until the date on the ticket - up to 10 days.
Failure to leave or get an extension will get him a fine of 100k AND a blackmark in his immigration file. This may make it more difficult to get another visa if he ever decides to return. |

| that is not true. If u are even 1 day past the date on ur ARC card u will be fined at the airport |

In my experience ttomptz is most definitely correct, in fact there seems to be very little he doesn't know. Oh, by the way ttomptz, cheers for the advice you gave me on the personal p.m. For the record all is good now, and I am full-time and loving it.
Now to get back on topic, let me provide you with my own personal experince. I received a letter of release from my former demonic Hogwon boss, and he and I filled out the necessary paperwork with immigration. On doing that they attached paperwork into my passport that told me and immi (at airport) when exactly I had to leave. For the record I was given 14 days, on the 15th day I had to leave, there was no exception to this rule. Thus on the 15th day I headed for Japan to do a visa run. Immi merely took out the attached paperwork, and entered my details into their computer, and I was allowed through to the departure gate. Why did I have to do a visa run? I was changing my visa status: I required an E-7 visa for my new job.
Perhaps, the extension of Soju or is that sojurn differs from immi to immi, but this was my experience, and being out of the country on the 15th day was the rule here back in September. I hope this answers your questions, but to reiterate ttomptz, go and speak to your local immi office. You should be given a more definite answer, but you could be told 'some cock and bull', who knows, but good luck.

It still is... IF you are changing your visa status mid-contract (fired or resigned). If you finish the contract, tom is right about leaving my midnight on the last date of your ARC. There is no "grace period" without going to Immigration and explicitly asking for it BEFORE the deadline arrives. |
