A while back a buddy of mine who works on that show "Surprise" asked me if I would like a job there. After considering his offer for about two nanoseconds (flattery factor), I told him if he wanted to keep our friendship alive and healthy, he should not say such things in the future.
If you examine this spate of recent suicides (and those throughout the years) of Korean entertainers, you read between the lines and realize that working in Korean entertainment is NOT a healthy place to be. Not for the little guys, and not for the big guns, either. |

you have a point there mtk, the pressure that is placed upon Koreans to do well surely must be magnified in the entertainment industry.
But I would probably argue that the Korean entertainment industry is a heathier place to be than the industry in the west - UK/USA etc. |

| According to a good number of people who have stopped me on the street, I already have a job on quite a few Korean entertainment and English-language programs. |

| I wouldn't want to be ANY kind of entertainer, except what I am now. Being in the spotlight and having no privacy would be too much to handle. |

It all depends. I say just make them come to you (i.e., let them give you time to look over the contract, dictate what you will and won't do, etc). If they don't want to do that, then they were more than likely just going to make you an engrish monkey. |

I'd do it for a larf. Why the hell not?
If the pay is better than teaching, than great, but even if the money ends up being about the same it sounds like it would still be a really fun experience. Having done high school drama and video shorts for fun I know for a fact that my looks and acting skills are no better or worse than those of the current cast of Suh-puh-la-ee-juh.
It's not like you wouldn't be able to go back to your teaching career once your 15 minutes of Korean fame were up.
If you're too camera shy to do it, than so be it, but if you think you're too cool to appear on a show like that you're probably taking yourself way too seriously. |

Oh, hey, just look for advertisments to be an extra. I was actually in a Korean tv show as an extra. Kinda boring actually, but paid like $50/hour. |

The money is not good. For "Surprise", if I remember correctly, the offer was roughly equivalent to 12 hours for W200,000, much less than a recording gig, for instance.

You mean per day, not hour. |

I'd do it on a lark. I stage-acted in Canada and did a bit of improvisational comedy, so why not? It'd be a hoot as a one-off, or a short part-time gig. But for the long-term? Nah.
And doing ANY sort of EBS garbage is right out! I was asked to do some EBS show in both of the last 2 hogwans I worked at. First time, they couldn't even tell me what I'd be paid or how many hours I'd have to work per week. No thanks. Turned the second one down flat. Judging by the unhappy teachers who took the job in my place, it was a good decision. |

If you find any acting jobs here that don't require you portraying all foreigners as idiotic clowns, then do spread the word. |

I'd be happy with one where I wouldn't be expected to jump around like an idiot because whatever I ate was SO SPICY! |

I did a Samsung commercial back in the 90's...best part about the job was the new suit I got to keep and the kiss the Canadian model gave me. She was a real model, here on a model contract and she was a KNOCKOUT baby!
But TV shows have to suck.
BTW pay back then for a commercial was about 375,000 won for 10 hours of sitting around and 1 hour of actual going through the motions...no speaking...just doing what the director told you to do.
Not bad if you have your gameboy with ya. |
