Nearly 7 years here and I've never been fishing. Nearly every weekend, back in NZ, I found time to go either fly fishing, surf casting, or to just sit on a jetty and contemplate nothing. I watch FTV on sky and don't really want to get into lake fishing here. However, some coastal areas look promising. Anyone out there a fisherman (person). If so, where do you go?

hey rednblack...I live on the southern coast and have been out a couple of times. I wasn't able to find any good spots though and haven't been back out since the weather turned cold. The tides change by such a large amount that many places are left with mud for 10-30 feet at low tide before hitting the water line. My best guess would be to fish off of piers or in lakes.

Where do you live? I've also been a regular of fishing back home in Louisiana and hope to get back to it when things warm up a bit.

There's nothing to catch here in Korea. All those shows on TV display those well equipped Koreans, who could rival arctic explorers, are only catching little baby fish or those silver-eel like fish.
Heck, they probably spent more on those coolers full of shrimp-bait then actually catching their money's worth of fish.

Sadly the fishing in Korea/Japan sucks. It's either over fished, or the waters are polluted.

You need to know someone who knows a special place.

Fishing sucks in Korea. All you catch is minnow sized fish.

I can't refute any of the above comments. My brother in law, however, belongs to a bass fishing club and when he came to visit me in Arizona, I took him up to Apache Lake and he had a great time. He knows a LOT about bass fishing, and if you're interested - I can hook you up with them. They're not remotely interested in practicing their English skills, I know this for a fact, so that shouldn't be an issue. I believe most of them are musicians like my brother in law, but again - I'm not sure.

As for what sizes the bass are and how much fun it'll be, you can decide that for yourself if you go on a fishing trip...be sure to let us know how it goes. PM me, I'll do my best to get you hooked up with them when they go out again.

PS - I have a box of brand new tackle you can use if you want it.

There is plenty of fishing to be had in South Korea. You have to know where to go and you need a car (or motorcycle, I suppose). Getting to good water is half the battle.

Here's some info:

I think I know what you're talking about. Getting those 2-man seine nets or little hand held scoop jobbies is a special kind of fun, wading in knee deep water and turning over rocks in the hopes of catching a disoriented minnow or two. After an hour, you have a can full and pass it off to the dominate Korean male, who makes a pathetic pot of fish soup, to the delight of everyone but yourself. Yes, the fun's in the hunt. Typical M.T. time-killing antics.

Listen to Dr. Buck.
Also, do a search. There have been several threads on fishing here.

In March there is a fishing show in Seoul. Here is the link:

Thanks everyone. Too chilly at the moment, but come May I plan to buy another car and deck myself out with some gear. I agree with those who say the fishing, of rather the size of the catch, is poor. However, as Hapki suggested, it's often the hunt that's fun. The bonus is a good fish.

Dam-on. I'm up in Incheon. Not too far from the airport. The fishing around here is not so good, so I'm led to believe. Pretty much tidal as down your way. Keep in touch. Maybe we could hook-up some time for a days fishing.

Superfly. Thanks very much. I'll PM you soonish.

Aldershot. Geoje-do is not that far away. I want to visit for a weekend anyway. So while I'm there I can check-out some rock fishing spots. Cheers.

Dr. Buck. Cheers also for the links.

the han river runs for more than 170 miles from its beginning north of solac mtn to where it flows into the yellow sea near kangwha. within the stretch of water between paldang and imjin, anglers can find trophy (american) bass, sturgeon, sogari (exellent eating fish), even rainbow trout in a river that flows through seoul. the biggest i ever caught was 3 ft long sturgeon.
